Face-to-face communication has been and will continue to be the foundation of the physician-patient
relationship. However, electronic communications with patients through telephone, e-mail, and websites
are forcing physicians to rethink the way they spend their day and provide care to patients, (Center for
Practice Improvement & Innovation, American College of Physicians, 2008)

Based on the information you learned from classroom discussions, assigned readings, and research;
answer the following:
1. List at minimum three benefits of using electronic communications. Which of the benefits you
listed has the greatest potential for risk? Explain your answer.
2. List at minimum three risks of using electronic communications. Which of the risks you listed
has the greatest potential for adversely affecting your medical office? Explain your answer.
3. Security and confidentiality of information are major concerns in medical offices. How would
you, the medical assistant, safeguard hardcopy and/or electronic information in the medical
office? Explain your answer.
4. Discuss how electronic technology may positively or negatively impact your ability to
