Intercultural Communication Paper
Due Date: Refer to your Course Outline & Schedule for the due date for this assignment.
Requirements: 3-5 full pages, typed, 12pt Times New Roman font, and double-spaced.
All key terms and concepts used should be in BOLD print. Make sure you are using one
of the following file formats (MicroSoft Word: .doc or .docx -OR- Rich Text: .rtf). I
prefer MS Word files (.doc or .docx), so use that if you have MS Word. Most word
processing software has the option of saving your document as a Rich Text file (or
even an MS Word file), so if you are not using MS Word and are not able to save your
paper in one of the two MS Word files above, make sure to save your paper in the
Rich Text format before uploading. If I can’t open your paper, you won’t receive a
grade.
Purpose: To analyze your own cultures and how those cultures have affected your own
style of communication.
Explanation: To succeed on this paper assignment, make sure you have read
Chapter 3 and the supplemental document Gender and Communication Style
(located on the Course Resources page) completely.
In Chapter 3 we covered the concept of Code Switching (pg 74). This often occurs
along cultural lines. The various cultures and co-cultures we belong to help
determine how we codify communication (encode and decode messages in a
particular way). This leads to a communication “style.” In this paper, you will be
examining your style of communication as it relates to the various cultures to which
you belong, primarily using information from Chapter 3 (though you may use
relevant concepts from any other chapter we have covered to this point).
In the document “Gender & Communication Style” in Course Resources, Deborah
Tannen gives some observations on how Gender (one cultural category) affects our
communication styles. The text mentions some other cultural categories (religion,
ethnicity, social class, and generation). There are many categories beyond these, of
course.
The Four parts of your paper should be:
1. Cultural Inventory:
First, write about your cultural identity (pg 77). Refer to the definition of Culture
in your text (pg 71) and come up with a list of at least 12 cultures to which you
belong (you don’t need to include the list of 12 in your actual paper). This should be
very easy as you belong to many more cultures than that. Once that is finished, rank
order the top three or four cultures that you believe have the most impact on your
cultural identity and explain why. Also explain whether these cultures are dominant
cultures or co-cultures (justify your answer with an explanation for each culture).2. Cultural Analysis:
Next, analyze your cultural identity. In analyzing your cultural identity, incorporate
the Cultural Dimensions detailed on pages 77-87 (including high and low context
cultures). You should address at least two of these in your paper. How do you fit into
these cultural dimensions and how do the cultures to which you belong play a role
in this? For more information on these cultural dimensions, visit the following
website: http://geert-hofstede.com/index.php
3. Communication Style Analysis:
Next, discuss how your cultural identity (various elements of your cultural identity)
affects your personal communication style. Use the Gender and Communication Style
document located in Course Resources as an example of how this can be done.
Tannen shows how gender culture can affect communication style. How do your
primary cultures that you listed in the first part have a similar affect on your own
communication style in your opinion?
4. Code Switching:
Finally, now that you have a sense of your culturally-derived communication style,
give an example how you have (or could have) used code-switching related to what
you have identified above in a communication transaction in order to overcome a
communication style difference. [One well-explained example is fine].
Note: If you identified Gender as one of your primary cultures, refrain from copying
Deborah Tannen’s insights over in place of your own insights. Either leave gender out
of your analysis, or feel free to include it if you have insights different form Deborah
Tannen. But, by all means, use Tannen’s insights as a model for how you could analyze
other cultures you focused in on.
As with all your writing assignments, incorporating key concepts from
elsewhere in the text when and where appropriate is always helpful and
distinguishes a good paper from an excellent paper.
