Instructions

Your assignment this week is to conduct a literature review focusing either on the military or health care sectors. This involves reviewing provided research articles and based on a framework provided below extracting critical information from the articles synthesizing it in a logical manner and writing a literature review.

To assist you in this effort a template is provided for writing your report. Additional resources are also provided including instructions for conducting a literature review. You should proceed in this manner this week:

1. Decide whether you would like to do a literature review of the military or the health care sector.

2. Download the articles for your sector.

3. Review the instructions and template for the sector you have selected.

4. Based on the “research issues” give to you in the instructions, review the literature, capture key points from each article on note pads organized around the “research issues,” assemble your notes from each pad and write a 4-to-6 page literature review, exclusive of front matter or references.

5. Submit the final written report by the due date.

Reviewing the Health Information Technology Literature
If you elect to use the health information technology sector for your literature review you must download the health care articles that are provided on Sakai. As you prepare to read and review the articles you must focus on the following specific “research” areas of emphasis:

• According to the provided literature, how have e-health records progressed over the past two decades and what is the current state of e-health records?
• What problems, challenges and barriers have been encountered in making progress in implementing e-health records technology and systems?
• According to the literature what administrative and strategic actions can be taken to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of implementing e-health records technology?
• What concepts learned this semester could be deployed to reduce the risk and improve the success of moving forward with health information technology within both the public and private sectors?

Reviewing the Military Information Technology Literature
If you elect to use the military information technology sector for your literature review you must download the military sector articles that are provided on Sakai. As you prepare to read and review the articles you must focus on the following specific “research” areas of emphasis:

• According to the provided literature, what types of over-arching challenges have the military/Department of Defense encountered in managing and implementing large scale technology projects?
• In terms of implementing complex applications like Enterprise Resource Planning, what problems, challenges and barriers have been encountered in making progress?
• Looking ahead at major initiatives such as data center consolidation and implementation of Cloud computing, according to the literature what administrative and strategic actions can be taken to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of implementing these challenging and complex technologies?
• What concepts learned this semester could be used to reduce the risk and improve the success of moving forward with these initiatives?
