In Module 2, you discussed offenses, consequences, and the guidelines judges use to determine punishment. If the crime is a state crime, and not federal, these factors are designated by state laws. These laws are created and passed in the state legislature and commonly compiled together in a code book or statutes.

Research your state’s (Illinois) law regarding armed robbery. You may use the Internet and the Argosy University online library resources to locate your state laws.   • Discuss whether your state’s (Illinois) statutes indicate a specific sentence or whether there is some discretion for the judge.
