Question 1: Elements within the Tourism SystemThe Majorca case study sheds light on the importance of systems thinking for the tourism industry in Majorca. It highlights the plight of an otherwise quiet location, now flooded with tourist and tourism activities, including pollution of the area and the culture. The new tourism attractions and the need to expand the accommodation services make up the bulk of the case study.

As shown in figure 1 below, there is a correlation between different elements in the tourism system. Two important elements in the tourism system include visitor attractions and accommodation services. Without these two elements, tourism would undoubtedly fail. Accommodation services conventionally focused on the hotel industry. However, modern accommodation options have grown to include options for the tourism sector (Lee, Jang, & Kim, 2020). Accommodation services add an extra layer of complexities to the varied structure of the tourism sector. Visitor attractions are also a critical part of the tourism system. For the Majorca case study, the visitor attractions include natural and built sceneries.

From the Majorca case study (Griffith University: Kanopy, 2000), visitor attractions are an example of a stock. They represent accumulations and come with a starting or initial value and are changed according to flows in and out of them. Accommodation services are flows. The presence of accommodation services indicates movement of material. Flows capture activity. If time were to stop in the tourist system, accommodation services would disappear on the basis of them being actions, making them flows. For example, accommodation services in the Majorca tourism sector are likely to come to an end if the constructions and the cultural issues would push developers and tourists away (Griffith University: Kanopy, 2000). As a flow in the tourism system in Majorca, accommodation services are less concrete and more likely to be affected by changes in the external environment.

Visitor attractions can be measured in numbers Question 2: Functions Performed by Visitor Attractions and Accommodation ServicesThe importance and function of visitor attractions can be divided into several elements depending on the location, the attraction, and the industry that an attraction services. Abuar et al. (2012) include the attraction of visitors from overseas, stimulation of domestic tourism, supporting area regeneration, contributing to the national or local economies, conservation, and promotion of cultural change as the major functions of visitor attractions. The main aim of an attraction is to grab the attention of potential customers in a way that lures them to visit a given location and explore other aspects within the tourism system. In the Majorca case study, there are both purpose built and natural attractions. Purpose built attractions include the hotel under construction, one that is purposefully designed to attract people in to the area. Natural attractions include the beach, the culture, and the beautiful sceneries. Accommodation services are a base for the tourism system because of the role played in tourism supply. In the travel and tourism sector, customers require a central point to act as a base, a temporary setting in their quest to explore. Accommodation services help in adding value to a tourism experience. They popularize tourist destinations and act as a bridge between the customer expectations and the visitor attractions.
