  8. Evaluate opportunities for intervention and advocacy as criminal justice practitioners at an individual and systems level, including available resources

COMPLETE:

In 3-5 pages (double-spaced), discuss course material and information presented for EACH of the objectives. I have included some recommended points of discussion below each of the objectives (in bold) below. You are welcome to choose your own. You do not have to use APA to cite course materials (lecture, ppt, video, articles, textbook, etc.). You can use in-text citations for this. IF you use outside resources, be sure to use APA. It may seem like a lot of writing, but you’ll find a paragraph or two under each objective should do the trick and go pretty quickly. I’d rather you saw this as an opportunity to reflect on what you’ve learned than a pass/fail situation. While I respect grades are important, I would prefer you place the priority on the issue and connecting information in a way that is meaningful to you. If you do this, you will have nothing to worry about in regards to your grade.

Define human trafficking to include labor and sex trafficking

  • What elements do labor and sex trafficking share by definition?
  • Provide three examples of labor trafficking and three examples of sex trafficking.
  • Provide a brief explanation or example for each example you provided.

***Hint: This would be a great place to incorporate course materials.

Understand the scope and prevalence of human trafficking in the United States

  • What are the most common forms of trafficking in the United States?
  • What demographics are most vulnerable, or most commonly victims?
  • What barrier(s) exist in establishing prevalence?

Review legislation and policy designed to aid in prosecution and protect victims

  • How can legislation influence policy at a systems level? Hint: Consider the National Defense Authorization Act of 2013 – Current Federal Legislation (Readings, Weeks 9 & 10).
  • Why are laws protecting victims essential to successful prosecution in trafficking cases?

Examine current efforts to combat the issue and explore opportunities for improvement

  • Identify, and describe one example of an effort focused on combatting the supply side of human trafficking.
  • What factors contribute to the success or failure of an initiative to combat trafficking? How? Hint: Think back to our discussions on resources, awareness, corruption, etc.

Discuss victimology, risk factors, and red flags

  • Identify and explain risk factors related to human trafficking.
  • In terms of identification of victims, what are “red flags” or potential indicators someone is being trafficked? Explain.
  • What traits might a trafficker look for in a potential victim?

Consider the impact of power, privilege and language

  • Do you feel your definition or perception of power and privilege have changed after taking this course? Why or why not?
  • What role do power and privilege play in choice?
  • What role can language play in our willingness to help others?

Explore the way in which traffickers and trafficking victims interact with the criminal justice system

  • Consider the information provided in the documentaries we have watched in class as well as the activity identifying various agencies in the categories of courts, corrections and law enforcement.

Evaluate opportunities for intervention and advocacy as criminal justice practitioners at an individual and systems level, including available resources

  • Consider the path a victim of human trafficking might follow through the criminal justice system from arrest to case disposition. As a practitioner in any one of these areas, how might you provide advocacy and resources?

Remember, these are guides. You can come up with your own points of discussion for each of the objectives just be sure to provide at least one example from the information covered in class or online (d2l) to support it.
