Paper instructions:he influence of poverty on health is a health problem that transcends national borders. This week’s readings discussed some of the political, economical, and ethical issues that lead to health disparities in developed and developing countries. In addition, Dr. Mancuso and Dr. Huijer shared insights on working within political systems to bring about positive changes in health care in the media. Dr. Mancuso also stressed the importance of nurses in addressing these needs and in bringing about change.

To prepare for this Discussion, review Case 9: “Improving the Health of the Poor in Mexico,” presented in the Case Studies in Global Health textbook. Then, respond to the following:

    Do you think giving the cash grants to the mothers was a good idea or a bad one?

    What might have been the positive and negative consequences of this choice?

    What ethical issues might arise, or be addressed, from the cash grants program?

        In this week’s video, Dr. Carol Holtz, Dr. Huda Huijer, Dr. Louise Fitzpatrick, and Dr. Leslie Mancuso discuss governmental influences on health care through regulation of access, ethical influences and their implications for poverty, plus financial influences on health care. Additionally, Dr. Mancuso talks about the importance of patient advocacy on behalf of the nurse.

        Chapter 8, “Public Health Policy”

        Government’s role in health care spans from providing government subsidized insurance such as Medicare and Medicaid, to regulation and legal actions. A variety of governmental agencies have a hand in shaping policy that affects a nurse’s work. This chapter explores the role of public health policy and how it influences nursing practice.

        Case 9, “Improving the Health of the Poor in Mexico”

        The rural poor of Mexico suffer preventable childhood and adult illnesses because of unhygienic living conditions, poor nutrition, and social deprivation. This case study explores how one organization in Mexico sought to address these issues to improve the population’s health.
