These are the instructions for it:

The goal of these news journals is twofold: a) To demonstrate a close and thoughtful engagement with the required readings for the week; and b) To increase your political literacy, an important skill and practice for democratic citizenship. Political literacy refers to your awareness and knowledge of political institutions and events, and your ability to form opinions about politics.

To complete your journals, you should peruse reputable news sources (online or print) and find one recent news story that focuses on a topic related to the week’s readings. (Articles should be about the U.S. government and American politics, and should be no older than 3 months.) Reputable sources are those that are widely respected and established. For example: a newspaper like The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, or The Sumter Item; a news magazine like The Economist; or a radio program or podcast, like NPR. You can choose regular news stories, opinion pieces (op-eds), or online videos or podcasts. The choice is up to you, but you must remember to include full source information in your journal entry.

This is how it will be graded:

Journal entries can receive up to 8 points. To earn full points, your entry must do three things well:

i) Briefly summarize the news story: in your own words, what is the story about? Your summary should take up the least amount of space in your entry.

ii) ii) Analyze the news story: how, in specific terms, does this story help us to better understand our course topics for the week? You must draw direct connections between the news article and a topic or theme from the week’s readings.

iii) iii) Articulate an opinion about the issue: what do you think? Where do you stand on the issue?

Your readings this week will focus on civil rights and the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution. You are responsible for reading pages 120-138 in We the People and listening to the episode “Sex Appeal” from the More Perfect Podcast (WNYC).
