Final Project – Grant Proposal
Students in SSCI 1910 – Writing for the Social Sciences will have the opportunity to complete a
Grant Proposal (15 points) as the Final Project. For the Grant Proposal, students are
responsible for researching, building and submitting a grant proposal for an original project or
program. Students must submit both the Proposal Framework and the Cover Letter together in
one document.
The Proposal Framework should be approximately 3-4 pages in length and must contain:
1. Statement of Need
2. Workplan (including Budget/Timeline tables)
3. Credentials/Organization (Note: students must “partner” with an existing non-profit or
community-based organization)
4. References (APA style)
The Proposal Cover Letter summarizes the various components of the Proposal Framework in
approximately 1 page. The Cover Letter should be the first page of your Proposal and should
be formatted professionally (see the Sample Grant Proposal). Your Cover Letter should be
addressed to the Ontario Trillium Foundation (Ontario Trillium Foundation, 800 Bay Street,
5th Floor, Toronto, ON M5S 3A9) and should include the following:
1. Project summary or overview
2. Specific objective(s) of the project
3. Specific amount of funding requested
4. Introduction to non-profit or community-based organization you intend to “partner” with
The Grant Proposal (Proposal Framework and Cover Letter) should be one complete
document, approximately 4-5 pages in length (single-spaced). Please review the Sample
Grant Proposal in the Week Twelve/Thirteen folder for a better understanding of length, level of

The Grant Proposal is worth 15 points and must be submitted by December 3rd at 12:00 p.m.
(noon). Students will be graded on the following criteria:
Proposal Cover Letter
5 marks
? Proposal Cover Letter clearly:
? States the need or objective of the project
? Asks for a specific amount of funding
? Summarizes the project clearly and effectively
? Introduces reader to the organization
? Formatted as a professional letter (see Sample
Grant Proposal) and addressed to Ontario Trillium
Foundation
Proposal Framework
8 marks
? Proposal Framework contains all required elements:
? Statement of Need
? Workplan (including Budget and Timeline)
? Credentials/Organization
? References
? Provides appropriate detail (aligns with Sample
Grant Proposal) and demonstrates evidence of
planning, research and understanding of key issues
Language
2 marks
? Submission adheres to standard writing
conventions, e.g. spelling, grammar, punctuation
(1/2 mark deducted for each error)
? In-text citations and References page adhere to
APA style (see APA Guide)
