For your final formal argumentative essay, take a stand on some aspect of parenting or childhood. This topic is very broad, so you will have to narrow it down to one aspect of parenting or childhood, and you might also want to narrow it down to a specific age group. Be sure to choose an aspect of parenting or childhood about which you already have strong feelings. Below are some questions to get you thinking. Should parents be friends with their children? Should parents be strict or permissive? How should children be disciplined? Is it better for children to be involved in a lot of activities or only a few? Are parents hurting or helping children by pushing them to achieve? Is there a minimum acceptable age for children to have a cell phone? Is smoking or drinking a problem among teenagers? What should parents do if they find alcohol in a child’s room or car? Is it okay for parents to drink alcohol in front of their children or take their children to a bar or nightclub? What are the effects of domestic violence on children? Is violence among teenagers a problem? What causes youth violence? What can be done about youth violence? How can the foster care system be improved? Should parents monitor their children’s use of the computer? Should parents censor their children’s exposure to television? Are video games good or bad for children? Should parents censor their children’s exposure to video games? Should minors be allowed to buy violent video games? Should parents censor their children’s exposure to music? Should teenagers be tried as adults in a court of law? Should parents insist that their children go to college?
