“Pearls of Wisdom,” or “Pearls” for short, are one-page papers written in 10 or 11-point
font in Times New Roman or Times. They must be double-spaced. List only your name
and the name of the Pearl at the top of each paper (ie: Population Pearl.) Please do not
use a cover sheet.
Some of you may struggle with this page limit, but the goal of limiting your writing to
one page is to encourage you to make your writing dense. Each sentence should be
essential (edit out the “fluffâ€â€”ie: intro. paragraphs, repeating the same point in different
ways, etc.). These papers must demonstrate thoughtfulness and a college-level
integration/application of appropriate course material. You do not need an introduction
and conclusion; you will not have the space. Any Pearl turned in with more than one
page will automatically lose 5 points.
Pearls should demonstrate college level writing and should be thoroughly edited. If you
need help with editing, please utilize the writing lab on campus or come to my office
hours to meet with me. You will be graded on your ability to convey your ideas (sentence
structure, grammar, etc.), your ability to address the entire assignment, your ability to
demonstrate self-awareness if the assignment requires it, and your ability to apply class information in a thoughtful way. I want to know that you understand the material and you
can apply the concepts we cover in class.
For all writing assignments for this course, you need to create your document in
either WORD, PDF, or HTML—that means when you save your response the
document title should be followed by either .doc, .docx, .pdf, or .html (if you do not
use one of these formats, there is a chance that your response cannot be read and
you won’t get a grade for it. Go to a campus computer lab for help if you don’t
know how to follow these instructions. PAGES is not an approved format). You
will then save it & upload it into the DROPBOX in D2L by the deadline. ***When
submitting ANYTHING to a D2L dropbox, be sure you save the D2L email confirmation
that you should receive if it’s been successfully submitted. I would save that email until
you see a grade posted for the assignment. If you don’t get an email confirmation, you
can’t assume it’s been submitted.
Here is general feedback that I’ve consolidated over the years to help improve Pearls.
Please take note before handing in your Pearls:
REFERENCING: At this point in your college career you should be aware of how to
appropriately reference using APA or MLA standards. I have a Referencing Guideline
posted that you should review, so there is really no excuse for incorrect referencing at this
point. Your reference section is not included in your one page limit. PLEASE follow
APA referencing guidelines if you are referencing outside material (including course
readings, textbooks, info. from lecture, etc.) or using a direct quote. Otherwise, just make
it clear where the information is coming from. ***Please note that when you are referring to a text, journal article, etc. in an academic
paper, you merely want to use the author’s last name. For example, if you are bringing in
a concept from Kitchen Table Wisdom, you would say, “According to Remen in Kitchen
Table Wisdom, …..” or “Gladwell illustrates this point in his book Blink…..”. Then you
would include the in-text citation at the end of that sentence. ie: (Gladwell, 2005) or
(Remen, 1996).
1. Please proofread your Pearls carefully and follow the assignment carefully. Please read
your paper aloud to catch awkward and unclear sentences. Please check for grammatical
errors. Remember these papers should be DENSE, so leave out unnecessary definitions,
intros, conclusions, etc. Just include what the assignment is asking for.
PLEASE visit the Writing Center to get further writing support. Go to:
http://www1.english.montana.edu/wc/hours.html
2. In these papers you should use the 1st person (ie: I, me, etc.) rather than the 2nd
(“you”) or 3rd person (“people”) tense. These are self-reflection papers, so I’m not
interested in generalizations such as, “People usually feel uncomfortable with this
population,” or “Everyone seems to feel this way….” or “You know when people seek
help they are really scared…” etc. Instead, you should state how YOU feel. ie: “I think I
may struggle with working with angry men.”
3. Be aware of the language you use to describe future clients. Avoid saying “those
people.” That tends to further alienate you from this population. Also, avoid labels. For
example, rather than calling people “child abusers,” state, “parents who abuse their children.” And be tentative. For example, say “parents who appear to behave
irresponsibly” rather than “irresponsible parents.” It may seem like the same thing, but
when we are trying to develop empathy for challenging populations, the language we use
can make a big difference. This also makes a significant difference when you start doing
clinical write ups of your clients and case notes. You never want to sound judgmental and
have it in writing that your client or other professionals have access to. This is
unprofessional.
4. Avoid sweeping generalizations or assumptions when describing populations. It is ok
to say, “I have made the assumption that people who abuse their children don’t love their
children.” That is different from saying, “People who abuse their children obviously don’t
care about their kids.” The second example is an assumption, the first sentence is
demonstrating self-awareness.
