Final Exam — Due by February 27, 2016, 1159 pmDirections

Final Exam — Due by February 27, 2016, 11:59 pmDirections: This final exam covers the materials from the entire semester. This exam requires you to respond to a series of essay questions. Your answers will be assessed in terms of your understanding of the material, your ability to present and analyze important issues in a clear and concise manner, as well as your ability to construct and present a cogent argument. In addition, your responses will be graded on structure and grammar.Keep in mind that this exam represents a significant portion of your final grade for this seminar. As such, I strongly advise you to take the time and energy to present an effort reflective of your status as a university student. This is your opportunity to pull together weeks’ worth of readings and discussions. Simplistic or superficial responses will receive no credit.Choose 4 of the following 6 essay questions to answer. Each question is worth 37.5 points. If you answer more than 4 questions, I will only grade the first four answered. I would expect that each answer will be approximately 1 1/2 to 2 pages long. Be sure to cite information when necessary (when paraphrasing; do not use quotations). You should rely ONLY on the course material when answering a question. I do not want to see references to encyclopedias, websites or other sources not used in this course. You will lose points if you do so.If a questions asks “what you think” about a particular issue, remember that I am not looking for an uninformed opinion. You are to discuss your views as they reflect a reading and understanding of the material. Please clearly label the question number to which you are responding. You do not need to rewrite the question, just list the question number you are answering. Please submit only one file containing all of your answers. Do not submit four separate files (one for each question). Label your file with your first and last name as follows: Doe_John_FinalExamFinally, a set of writing guidelines follows the essay questions. BE SURE to review these formatting requirements.Good Luck!1. Corrections has always struggled with conflicting goals. Identify at least 3 corrections goals (e.g., rehabilitation, deterrence, incapacitation, retribution, etc.) and explain how they fight against one another. How can this conflict be minimized? Is it possible that this goal conflict may actually be good for corrections? 2. Discuss the historical development of parole and indeterminate sentencing. Do either have a place in the current correctional climate or would we be better off to abolish them? Defend your answer.3. Twenty-five years ago, the “three P’s”—probation, prisons, and parole—dominated correctional practice. Today all kinds of activities come under the heading of corrections. Identify at least three other practices or programs that are considered part of corrections. Discuss how their existence has fostered the growth of corrections.4. Women are often referred to as “the forgotten offenders.” Discuss how they have come to receive this title. Be sure to discuss in what ways are they forgotten and the way that sexism has impacted the experiences of women offenders. Be sure to bring in material from both the text and the assigned videos.5. Discuss what is meant when it is said that corrections has an ambiguous mission. Be sure to discuss what role this mission plays and how the ambiguity of this mission affects the system. Be sure to also discuss what the public, offenders, victims and communities want from corrections and whether these competing desires can be reconciled?6. The method by which someone is executed in the United States has changed over time. Identify at least 3 methods and place them in temporal order. Why does the method change? Why does the method matter? Does changing the method address any of the arguments that surround capital punishment? When answering this question, be sure to bring in material from the videos, as well as the course text. _____________________________________________________________________________Writing GuidelinesYour essay exam will be graded on your ability to present and analyze important issues in a clear and concise manner, as well as structure and grammar. This guideline is designed as a ‘check list’ to cover basic requirements for this exam. Be sure to review this checklist prior to turning in your paper. You will lose points if you do not follow these formatting guidelines. I expect you to closely edit your exam prior to submission. A paper that does not follow these guidelines will receive a “0”. 1-inch margins ONLYDouble-spaced ONLYCover page with name, date, etc.Spell checkedNumbered pagesCorrect grammar; for example, be sure to know when to use a comma and when to use a semicolonUse ‘Times New Roman’ font or similarly sized fontDo not use contractions (can’t, isn’t, aren’t)Do not use first or second person (I, you, our, we, etc.)Do not use quotations.
