My aunt admitted that women did not have much freedom as it is evident in the current world. According to her, currently women have become more aggressive and absolutely different creatures that she earlier knew while she was growing.

There is absolutely great difference between the current woman and the woman in the past. The increase of women empowerment campaigns and gender sensitivity issues everywhere across the media has brought great exposure to the nowadays woman.

My aunt asserted that traditional culture initially created an active man compared to woman by even assigning specific roles to men and others to women. However, the change of culture has to a large extend, empowered women thus making them almost equal to men. Men were believed to take control of almost every role in the society while women were just seen as a subordinate. According to Vijayasiri (2011), women were expected to have vast experience in domesticity while men were meant to protect, have authority and be the sole providers of basic needs in their families. Sexuality and gender has been greatly influenced by our cultural and societal norms. Women are believed to be weaker sex that can only take care of children, look after their homes and serve their husbands. This is the general perspective of the public about the women role in the society even today thus limiting them from attaining significant role in various fields. However, it is interesting to note that some women and men have come out strongly to defend women (Wan, 2012).

My aunt who is of Islamic religion said that what others call discrimination and male chauvinism in Islamic world has saved marriages and maintained strong societal values. A woman is also regarded as a daughter, sister of men and a wife who acts as a source of comfort for their husbands. According to Vijayasiri (2011), women are considered important in the society because they are responsible for nurturing, reformation and infusion of principles and faith into the souls of both men and women. Muslim women are not stripped of their morality and chastity as women in other parts of the world who are depicted badly or rather immorally in the media and even in the society. My aunt said that their dressing style is very respectful and does not expose her body parts for the public to see. She said that contradicting the Sharia and its morals may land someone to immoral behaviors that some people call civilization.

According Wan (2012), gender abuses are widespread worldwide and there are several cases arising daily concerning these issues particularly women and female child abuses. A woman’s place in the society has really been abused and this has prompted many organizations to come out ferociously to protect against this aboriginal act. Women abuse is very popular and it has become like an order of the day since in some societies even a boy child does not give an elderly woman the deserved respect equal to the one he would give to a male counterpart. In various societies, a woman is considered as a weaker sex who cannot handle some tasks. Could problem have been the society we live in? Or is it our forefathers’ who initiated this?

Currently, there is a great change in the position of women in the society even though the gender inequality has not been fully addressed. Although in some instances, the modern woman is viewed as a sex tool thus forcing them to do a lot of make ups and disregarding their natural look there is a great step taken in future (Wan, 2012). Current woman wears any type of cloth she deems exposes her body which they believe improve their looks instead of focusing on the implications or consequences of wearing such kind of dresses to the opposite sex.

Most employees and labor laws currently protect women in the society and in work places. The issue of discrimination against women has greatly gone down. Abusive marriages have been nicely stipulated in the law with options of separation and divorce which tends to help women a lot in terms of property sharing and ownership. There are also very tough laws addressing gender violence in the society. Women generally enjoy almost equal opportunity like men such as acquiring education. However, empowering women has somehow gone overboard as the male child is now forgotten. Law tends to support and protect female children and women in general more than it does to male child. There are many cases of men or male children being abused by women but this is never taken as serious as it does when a woman is victimized. Nevertheless, women are more enlightened and most of them have held successful and top most positions in different field ranging from business world to politics.
