Chapter 5 states that barriers to effective listening are present at every stage of the listening process.

  • Explain what each of the barriers are and how we might overcome them.
  • Describe an example from one of the module videos.

Use one of the videos linked in the content area as well as your textbook to respond to the topic questions.  Remember to cite the video and your text using either MLA or APA style. If you have a hard copy of the Flat World book, then cite using page numbers. If you use a digital copy, then cite using chapter and section numbers.

  • Your reply to the original topic questions must be a minimum of 300 words.
  • You must reply to at least two classmates’ postings with a minimum of 50 words each.
  • Respond with a thought-provoking comment on the ideas and research presented.
  • Do not simply comment on grammar and rhetoric.

Modules 6 & 7 Discussion Question Chapters 6 & 7

Locked after Sunday, March 4, 2018 11:59 PM EST. Must post first.

Chapter 6 explains that Social Penetration Theory (SPT) states that as we get to know someone, we engage in a reciprocal process of self-disclosure that changes in breadth and depth and affects how a relationship develops.  In Chapter 7, we are told that Social Exchange Theory (SET) essentially entails a weighing of the costs and rewards in a given relationship.  Rewards are outcomes that we get from a relationship that benefit us in some way, while costs range from granting favors to providing emotional support.

  • Which one of the two theories (either SPT or SET) you feel accurately describe one interpersonal relationship in your life?
  • Explain the relationship and how the theory accurately explains the unfolding of your relationship.

Use one of the videos linked in the content area as well as your textbook to respond to the topic questions.  Remember to cite the video and your text using either MLA or APA style. If you have a hard copy of the Flat World book, then cite using page numbers. Module 9 Discussion Question Chapter 13

Locked after Monday, March 19, 2018 11:59 PM EDT. Must post first.

After reading Chapter 13, we understand small groups better. We read that there is no set number of members for the ideal small group. A small group requires a minimum of three people (because two people would be a pair or dyad), but the upper range of group size is contingent on the purpose of the group. When groups grow beyond fifteen to twenty members, it becomes difficult to consider them a small group based on the previous definition.

Write about a group experience you have had. Watch the video “Built a tower, Build a Team” and use it for support while you write.  Answer the following questions:

  • Did you enjoy the group experience?
  • Why or why not?
  • How could you have improved the experience?

Use one of the videos linked in the content area as well as your textbook to respond to the topic questions.  Remember to cite the video and your text using either MLA or APA style. If you have a hard copy of the Flat World book, then cite using page numbers. If you use a digital copy, then cite using chapter and section numbers.
