Nursing research is a dynamic process that includes multiple phases: defining the research problem; literature review; selecting a theoretical framework; choosing an appropriate design; defining a sampling strategy; collecting and analyzing data; sharing the findings; and using the evidence in practice.  “In today’s healthcare systems, evidence-based practice involves integrating the best available evidence with clinical judgment, client values, and consideration of available resources.  Evidence-based nursing practice involves rationalizing one’s actions with credible evidence of the effectiveness of those actions to promote optimal patient outcomes” (Ferguson and Day, 2004, p.491)

Finding and developing significant problems for research are essential to improving outcomes for patients, families, the profession of nursing, and the health care environment. Research problems focus on topics requiring investigation, which may warrant a change in nursing practice.

There continues to be gaps between theoretical literature and nursing practice. Nurses continue to struggle with deciphering what is credible evidence and fear leaving the comfort zone of “this is how it has always been done”.  The internet is an excellent resource but it can also be a detriment when findings are not from scholarly resources or appropriate for practice. What are the gaps we see in nursing? It is essential we decrease these gaps and include the process of evidence based literature reviews into the hospital settings (Tagney and Haines, 2009).  What resources would be beneficial in decreasing the theory to practice gap?

Given your experience in search of your topic, what gaps in evidence were found? What challenges were there in finding appropriate search terms? What led you to believe the sources of information were credible, along with the credentials of the authors? Consider your assigned group topic and describe the knowledge gap that research could fill. Next, identify the PICOT elements that might be found in a research question related to your assigned topic.
