Discussion: Designing Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment

Curriculum planning can often seem simple on the surface but is in fact a complex task. There are many factors to consider before planning classroom curriculum. Henson (2015) explores how constructivism, multiculturalism, and education reform affect curriculum planning in Chapter 1. The definition of curriculum takes shape in this first chapter; how might exploring the past and present impact your definition and design of curriculum, instruction, and assessment design?

Throughout this course, you will have the opportunity to evaluate your role as an educator and designer of curriculum, instruction, and assessment. This module’s Learning Resources explore not only the many important roles you play, but also provide a context for the role of educators today by presenting some of the major events in education that have led to the present era of standards and accountability.

For this Discussion, you will evaluate the influence of major education events, constructivism, multiculturalism, and education reform on 21st-century educators’ responsibilities and your own role as a designer of curriculum.

Refer to the Discussion Board Rubric in the MSED Documents area under Course Home to familiarize yourself with the evaluative criteria for Discussion Board Assignments.

To Prepare:

  • Reflect on the media segment Designing Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment: Education Todayand how major events in education have led to the present era of standards and accountability. How have these events influenced your role as an educator within your current teaching situation?
  • Reflect upon Henson’s statements regarding how constructivism, multiculturalism, and education reform can be integrated into curriculum planning.
  • Think about the practicing teachers from the Voices From the Field (Laureate, 2015c) media and the essays from the Sonia Nieto’s Why We Teach Now (2015) from EDUC 6610. How might the insights you gathered influence your own curriculum planning?

By Day 7 of Week 1

Read a selection of your colleagues’ posts. As you read, note those to which you would like to respond with advice, questions, comments, and/or encouragement.

Respond to two or more of your colleagues with a different perspective than your own. Share how the components of education (constructivism, multiculturalism, and education reform) have affected you differently. Support your response with a specific example from your professional practice to support your statement.

Assignment: Hidden Curriculum

Designing curriculum can be a simple task at first glance; however, designing effective curriculum personalized for each individual student can present many challenges. It is important to address these challenges and any obstacles that may impede learning and instruction. In Chapter 1, Henson (2015) discusses the idea of hidden curriculum. Whether intentional or unintentional, hidden curriculum can have a profound impact on student learning. Being aware of all aspects of the classroom will provide equity and meet the diverse learning needs of the students.

For this Assignment, you will explore hidden curriculum within your current learning environment. Be sure to review the MSED Assignment/Reflective Essay Rubric located in the MSED Documents area under Course Home as you complete this Assignment.
