A comparison of the three founding documents of the United States: The Declaration of Independence, The Articles of Confederation and United States Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which is included in its entirety in this syllabus. This essay which is only two to four pages (with each page = 250 words) should review what rights are given in those documents and comment on if they are adequately meeting the needs of twenty-first century societies. Ask youself what rights you think people ought to have. Consider that our Bill of Rights is a list of political rights, but that most modern democracies have expanded that to social and economic rights which encompass the right to health care, social security, education and a job. You could think about the right to food, water and clean air. It is too much to ask of a government to provide some basic standard of living for its population. Final paper, now four to six pages since we missed the performance of the play, on the right to strike, specifically on the transit workers’ strike of 2005. I wrote a detailed outline for this paper and sent it as a message through the Blackboard email system. Please refer back to that. This paper can also comment on the use of a dramatic form, namely, the play, as an educational device. As you read it, is it helpful in understanding the levels of the court systems, the difference between administrative law (the PERB decision) and the trial and appellate courts, and the use of an United Nations tribunal (the International Labour Organization) to try the case of the Transport Workers Union vs the United States. I know this is not an easy assignment but I hope you take some time in thinking about the issue of federal law giving private sector workers the right to strike, but state’s not allowing public sector workers the right to strike. You may also comment on the recent upsurge in strikes around the country, particularly of public school teachers.
