Power and leadership are linked thoroughly, in that those who possess power even outside of a field can wield power within that field. For example, take a look at Hollywood celebrities; some of them can make a huge impact on certain things, through sheer force of their fame and fortune. People will more readily listen to someone who is well-known, even if it isn’t inside of a field they necessarily know anything about; look at the celebrities who champion climate change, such as Harrison Ford, known for his role in the Star Wars and Indiana Jones films, Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic, Django Unchained), or Mark Ruffalo (probably best known as Bruce Banner and the Incredible Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe).
However, there are some people who have power and are leaders who use their power for personal gain, despite there being mechanisms in place to try and prevent that exact sort of thing. Our President, Donald Trump, for example, has abused his position as President to try and extend his financial and personal reach. as well as for other personal gains. For example, pre-Presidency, Trump used his personal brand to build his real estate holdings, as well as the numerous sexual allegations against him. Recently, he used his official Twitter account to promote and endorse the book by his son, Triggered: How the Left Thrives on Hate and Wants to Silence Us, which is a violation of 5 CFR § 2635.702 – Use of public office for private gain. It’s like how trying to use his own hotel in Miami for the G7 summit would also be a violation of using his public office for private gain.

The relationship between power and leadership is both in how the power is obtained and how the power is utilized. In order to lead effectively a leader must posses and obtain a few key attributes along the way, which will allow them to not only be effective but to not be abusive. The power is in the ability of the leader to obtain credibility and followers through the building of trust. This trust and power is obtained by communicating effectively, listening, and maintaining an overall positive worker satisfaction. This satisfaction can be amplified by continuously working on team building, giving constructive feedback that allows the employees to grow, setting proper expectations and goals and continuously coaching to form a partnership. This partnership insures a boss is not in a power position of dictating all behaviors and decisions. In order to limit this possible abuse, companies can instill greater checks and balances, including worker satisfaction surveys and anonymous reporting of instances that might cross the line. Using Nelson Mandela as example, he is often recognized as a great leader due to his ability to listen, forge partnerships, gain credibility through leading by example and through his effective communication. He wasn’t known as someone who would simply drive his views through others, but he walked the walk as a true leader.
