This assignment requires the student to focus on a DSM-V disorder OR mental health topic of choice represented in the textbook or of personal interest, and will complete a 6-8 page research paper.  The paper should include prevalence and underlying causes of disorder or mental health issue, therapeutic interventions, treatment techniques, and effective modalities.  Students should include a minimum of 3-5 research articles relevant to the disorder or topic.  One source can include your textbook.  The research paper should include critique of the literature as well as conclusions that integrate your own personal reactions to the literature and topic of choice. Ex: Do you feel that depression is treated properly or could clinicians do a better job?  If no, what might you suggest?  Be sure to include effective treatments and considerations for diverse populations. (Ex: depression- How does the Latino community experience depression, what treatment techniques are useful to include in therapy, what may be the best modality, is there a lack of research or information overall?) OR (Intelligence, how might we measure it better? What is problematic throughout school systems?  What are suggestions both personal and scientifically based? (School bombings: how do we better assess/help individuals with mental health issues that act out in these ways?  How can we provide interventions and preventions?)
