Cause and effect essays examine why (the cause) a certain event or situation occurred and the consequences of the event (the effect). Cause and effect is a common method that people use to discuss ideas.

An easy way to think of cause and effect is to think about an outcome of an event. Use the following example:

John submitted his assignment early (the effect).
John had an unexpected day off from work (the cause), so he was able to complete his assignment and submit it early (the effect).

Some events have a number of causes and effects. Cause and effect events can be arranged in the order that they occurred or by the order of significance.

Susan did not see the sign on the Interstate.
She got off at the wrong exit.
She drove for 2 hours.
Susan stopped for lunch in a small town where the pace was slow and the people were very friendly.
She learned about a shortcut that would head her in the right direction.
She saw a For Sale sign on a house like the one she had always dreamed of owning.
Susan eventually bought the house and moved to the quaint town that she found so charming.

Write a 5-paragraph essay that discusses the causes, the effects, or both of an event, invention, or discovery that changed the world. Use transitions to connect your sentences. Standard English language conventions are required.
