Does sex education prevent teen pregnancy?

Sex education is a subject that has been included in the school curriculum so as to educate students on making responsible choices involving this issue. This topic is of interest to me because it not only affects high school teenagers like me, but it involves the society as a whole. This topic is worth thinking about in that the rate of teenage pregnancies continues to increase by the day. The proper solution cannot be found because pregnancies occur as a result of individual decisions. It is thus vital to remove the stigma that comes with this topic so as to prevent teen pregnancies.

The transition from childhood to adulthood is a pivotal part for life of any child. When a child becomes of age, they begin to realize some changes and feelings that dictate on their future decisions. The ability to make the right decisions should be learnt at an early age so as to produce responsible members of the society. One of the areas that prove to be challenging in the life of a teen is the choice on the right time to start having sex. Due to the fact that students come from different cultural backgrounds, it is difficult to determine the right time to educate children on this matter.

This as a result, led to the introduction of sex education in the school curriculum. The main reason for sex education is to guide students on the making responsible decisions in matters of relationships. Despite the introduction of sex education, the rate of teen pregnancies still remains a crucial issue in the society. The argument on whether sex education prevents teen pregnancies has been met with different views from both professionals and non professionals. It is crucial for members of the society to talk about such issues so that practical solutions can be found on how to tackle the problem.

Sex education is the discussion of changes in both boys and girls when they reach the puberty stage. It talks about the use of protection in terms of condoms and the pill if teenagers cannot abstain. It finally talks about the repercussions such as teen pregnancy and the contraction of sexually transmitted diseases. This is evident that the introduction of sex education steers teenagers in the right direction. If this is indeed the case, why does the rate of teen pregnancy continue to spiral out of control? As stated earlier, this topic affects the teenagers the most. Teenagers are the future of the society; their decisions thus do not only affect themselves but also affects the health unborn child and the living standards of the society.

In conclusion, it is essential to recognize a problem in order to find its solution. Early teen pregnancies have resulted in unwanted abortions, death during childbirth and poor parenting. Most of these factors showcase the repercussions of teen sex. For most of these situations to be avoided, both parents and teachers need to discuss if sex education is helping or hurting students. Exposing students to the realities of life can either help or hurt them. Sex education is essential because today’s society exposes a child to many social ills. Educators should look into the curriculum and analyze which part of the class ensures that a child makes the right decision.
