Discussion 1: Adding Your Voice to the Field of Education Professionals

The Learning Resources for this module are rich with the voices of practicing teachers discussing the field of education and learners in the 21st-Century. They explain why they stay in teaching, what motivates them to teach, and how important they feel their job as a teaching professional is for their students. Think about your own thoughts and perspective on these topics. What did you hear that was similar? What was different? What resonated with you as you read about and listened to their stories? What would you say if asked to add your voice to the field?

For this Discussion, you will analyze your view of teacher professionalism in order to add your own voice to the field. You will also examine professionalism in relation to the propositions, dispositions, and proficiencies expected of 21st-Century teachers.

Refer to the Discussion Board Rubric in the MSED Documents area under Course Home to familiarize yourself with the evaluative criteria for Discussion Board Assignments.

To prepare

  • Review all readings and media in this module’s Learning Resources.
  • Review the readings from the course text for this module and consider how each essay touches on the concept of professionalism in education.
  • Review the Kaltura Quick Start guide located on the entry page of your Student Portal (you will need to scroll down to locate it).
  • Review the resources contained in the Kaltura Media Uploader link on the course navigation menu, as for this discussion, you will be posting a video or audio recording for your response.
  • Think about the NBPTS core propositions, and RWRCOEL Dispositions, and Diversity and Technology Proficiencies; how do they relate to your view of teachers as professionals?
  • Consider how you might share your view of professionalism if you were a part of the Teacher as Professional video series.

By Day 3 of Week 2

Post a 3- to 5-minute video or audio recording, along with a written transcript, to add your voice to the field. In your post:

  • Explain your view of teacher professionalism and how it guides your professional practice.
  • Explain how professionalism relates to the NBPTS five Core Propositions, RWRCOEL’s Professional Dispositions, and Diversity and Technology Proficiencies.

Support your video or audio recording with cited references from the course material including media and at least one outside source (see acceptable outside sources in the MSED Documents area, as well as your own professional experiences to support your thinking.

Important Note: All media you create throughout the MSED program should include a transcript, as the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) requires such information to be available to students.

By Day 7 of Week 2

View a selection of your colleagues’ videos or audio recordings.

Respond to at least two of your colleagues in one or more of the following ways:

  • Ask a probing or clarifying question in regards to teacher professionalism.
  • Offer an opinion supporting or refuting a colleague’s thoughts on the relationship between professionalism and teacher propositions, dispositions, and proficiencies.
  • Share an insight gained from having viewed or listened to your colleagues’ postings.

Make sure to include cited references in responses to at least two of your colleagues.

Return to your initial posting and reflect on your colleagues’ responses and your own learning.

Discussion 2: Critiquing Teacher Professionalism and Practices

I have come to understand from my experience and the work of Paulo Freire that what you love you won’t let fail! I teach because, just as these two teachers became the wind beneath my wings many years ago, I am continually inspired to guide my students. As we also “fly to the east and fly to the west,” I want each one of them to know I love them best. (Nieto, 2014, p. 111)

In this second week of Module 2, you have more time to view and think about different perspectives on teacher professionalism and whether your current practices exemplify those views. Some views will resonate deeply with your core beliefs about teaching, and others may not. As you review and reread the Learning Resources this week, keep in mind how the NBPTS Core Propositions, RWRCOEL’s Professional Dispositions, and Technology Proficiencies, fit into these various perspectives as well as the degree to which your teaching practices exemplify these three professional expectations.

For this Discussion, you will continue to analyze the relationship between professionalism and teacher expectations. You will also critique the professionalism and teaching practices of a 21st-Century teacher.

Refer to the Discussion Board Rubric  in the MSED Documents area under Course Home to familiarize yourself with the evaluative criteria for Discussion Board Assignments.

To prepare

  • Read Chapter 9 in the Nieto (2014) text and review the Learning Resources related to teacher propositions, dispositions, and proficiencies.
  • Reflect on your own views of teacher professionalism and the voices from the field in this module’s media pieces.
  • As you read Haney’s essay, take notes on the graphic organizer in the Learning Resources regarding where she did or did not demonstrate the propositions, dispositions, and proficiencies as a professional and in her teaching practices.

By Day 3 of Week 3

Post your response to the following questions:

  • Do you view Haney as a professional? Support your response with specific references to your own view of professionalism and the Learning Resources.
  • Do you think Haney exemplified effective teaching practices? Why or why not?
  • How might you argue that Haney was creating positive social change?
  • What is at least one question would you want to ask Haney? Provide an explanation (i.e., rationale) for your particular question.

Support your response with specific references to the Learning Resources including media and at least one outside source (see acceptable outside sources in the MSED Documents area), as well as your own professional experiences to support your thinking.

By Day 7 of Week 3

Read a selection of your colleagues’ posts.

Respond to at least two of your colleagues by respectfully agreeing or disagreeing with an idea presented by your colleagues. Be sure to cite specific references from the Learning Resources, at least one peer-reviewed journal articles, and personal experiences to support your response.

Return to your initial posting and reflect on your colleagues’ responses and your own learning.
