Affirmative action is viewed as a controversial policy and management practice by individuals. Some of the controversies stem from a lack of knowledge and understanding of affirmative action. There are several benefits to implementing affirmation action policies and management practices. However, throughout the years policy improvements have been made and are still needed.
Affirmative action is an active effort to improve the employment or educational opportunities of members of minority groups and women sought to achieve a multicultural staff through affirmative action. It’s also a similar effort to promote the rights or progress of other disadvantaged persons (Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, 2015). The main purpose is to remedy discrimination and is important for making workplace decisions.
The cons of affirmation action are individuals’ negative perceptions due to a lack of awareness. At times it’s perceived that women and minorities are hired due to gender or race instead of being based on skills and education. People may question the credentials of individuals who are highly qualified for the position. Others believe affirmative action policies and management practices are ineffective.
Business who implement affirmative action policies can have positive outcomes. Affirmative action plans define an employer’s standard for proactively recruiting, hiring and promoting women, minorities, disabled individuals and veterans. It’s deemed a moral and social obligation to amend historical wrongs and eliminate the present effects of past discrimination (What is the difference between EEO, affirmative action and diversity?, 2017). The purpose is to promote workplace inclusiveness and necessary to have equality. Affirmative action was created to address societal, endemic, persistent and systematic discrimination (Bennett-Alexander & Hartman, 2015, p. 210). Christian leaders should view affirmative action as a guide to make business decisions that are equitable for all employees. Psalm 25:9 states, “He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way†(New International Version). We are to treat people fairly and value the talents God has given to each person.
