We will be taking a journalistic approach (one last time) for Online Discussion 4 & 5. For Chapters 8-9 assume the role of a journalist, reflecting on the tremendous social, cultural, economic, and diplomatic changes that have transpired. What role (if any) has the US played in influencing and shaping Latin American countries. How did they accomplish this, and what consequences did this have? (Chapter 7 is titled neocolonialism) and Chapter 8-Nationalism and Chapter 9-Revolution. Reflect on some on the themes from Ch 8/9, and from your journalistic account, looking back, what changes did you observe taking place throughout Latin American countries? This is intended to get you to think about some of these bigger developments that have taken place over, 5, 10, 20 years.
Chapter 9/ Revolution, what do you think that means in terms of societal currents that continue to shift. You will be graded on the analysis and critical thinking that corresponds to answering some of the questions. Please be sure to incorporate at least 6 key terms (please put them in bold, underline, or color code them) from the chapters in your online discussion/Journal entry. Continue to cite throughout your reporting as you have done previously (Chasteen 96). Use at least 3 key terms from each chapter (8/9). Journal responses should be at least 700 words. This will be due Saturday December 7 (10:00PM). Is there one, or a few unifying themes that bind Latin American countries during this period? As a wise journalist, do you feel some of these countries are headed in the right, positive direction, aimed at the best interest of the people? Why or why not? Are there any political, economic, cultural barriers?
This Online discussion will be the last one and it is worth a total of 40 points. I decided to combine the chapters in order to give you the opportunity to bridge ideas and themes that may have been discussed in chapters 8 and 9. I look forward to reading your responses, and there is a sample under Pages, in how you might be able to construct your journalistic account.
