Week 7:  Building the Project Plan, International Projects

Building the Project Plan from Components

Over the course of this semester, you have been build the components of a Project Plan, which is the final deliverable presented to your Project Sponsor and/or Steering Committee to receive approval to move from the Planning project phase into Execution.  This week, you will build the final components and develop an outline for your project plan, summarizing the feedback that you have received over the course of the semester.  Providing this information will help you to prepare for your final assignment (submitting a complete Project Plan in Week 8).  Some key components of a Project Plan typically include a:

•   Scope Statement and Scope Management Plan (including an integrated change control process)

•   Stakeholder Management Plan (includes an analysis of key stakeholders, as well as their requirements and expectations from the project)Human Resources Management Plan (discussing key roles, responsibilities, and reporting structure)

•   Project Schedule (showing all milestones/tasks necessary to complete the project, in the proper sequence, with the right human resources and costs associated with each task)

•   Communications Management Plan (explaining how stakeholders should expect to receive information about the project)

•   Quality Management Plan (describing what quality standards are assigned to certain deliverables and how quality will be managed)

•   Cost Management Plan (explains how costs were estimated and what steps will be utilized to manage the budget effectively)

•   Risk Management Plan (discusses the various risks on the project, ranks/prioritizes them accurately, and discusses response strategies)

 

 

FEEDBACK-

 

SOW- Good project choice.  Very concise statement of the project’s purpose.  The seven year timeframe and the expectation of getting it done in 2015 is a bit confusing – may want to clarify the timeframe.  The project status area needs some work.  This is typically where you would explain what you have done to date and what you are currently working on.  Going forward, it will be important for your team to clarify some of these points as you move forward with additional assignments.  Good first start – this lays the groundwork that we will start building on. 

 

Stakeholder Management Plan

Requirements Traceablitiy-WBS- Great job on this assignment.  Your team did an excellent job identifying stakeholders, discussing the distinctions of each, and analyzing their particular needs.  Keep up the good work!

 

Final deliverable WBS– Great job building out most elements of this assignment in the project charter. 

 

Quality management Plan– The one aspect that was a little vague and undetailed was what was in scope and what was out of scope.  Your team may want to lock that down as you move forward.  For example, what might be in scope could be included as in-scope or out of scope could hinge on what you classify as “sports teams” (i.e. are club sports included, is it for both men’s and women’s sports, etc.). 

 

Project Schedule- Your team did a great job on brainstorming for this assignment.  Keep up the good work!

 

Communication Management Plan- Great job on this assignment.  Good discussion of why communications is important and good choices for the type of communications.  Keep up the good work!

 

Risk Management Plan-

Not the best job on this assignment.  I would have expected that you provided a lot more detail around each of the three approaches and a lot more clarity as to how to go about them.  I also expected a bit more discussion about why you chose the approach you did over the others (i.e. pros/cons may have helped).  Make sure to use/reference the readings and course content as you move forward to ensure that you get the best result/grade possible. 

Good overall job on the write up of roles.  All the right information was in there, but the presentation left a bit to be desired.  In the final deliverable (the Project Plan in Week 8), you may want to flip this around and put the position name, skills required, and then provide some of the tasks they will be responsible for.  Great job on the org chart!  Keep up the good work!
