1. Moving ahead through the lifespan to middle childhood – ages 6-12 – we begin looking at the physical and cognitive aspects of development at this stage. Learning and refining skills play a vital role. Physical maturation occurs, and motor skills have an effect on physical activities. Are there sports, games, or other physical activities that are more encouraged for boys than girls in the neighborhood in which you live? Are there activities that are encouraged more for girls than boys? If so, do these reflect commonly held gender stereotypes?
2. Why is obesity becoming more prevalent among grade school children in the United States? What can be done to stop this increasing trend that will contribute to diabetes and other health problems for these children?
3. What is concrete operational thinking, and what can parents and teachers do to help children experience that contributes to this type of thinking?
4. There are several multiple-component-models (theories) of intelligence identified by researchers. One of these theoretical models was developed by Robert Sternberg who identified 3 different types of intellectual abilities. Describe these three types of intelligence, and suggest some occupations that would emphasize each of these 3 different types of intellectual abilities.
