Cultural Perspective

Q1. Poetical lyrical devices employed in the poem.

The poem Cultural perspective employs a number of poetic devices. The poet uses poetic devices of rhymes, irony, metaphor and alliteration among other devices. The poet uses this devices to make the poem musical, memorable. They also play an aesthetic role. For instance, the poet uses rhyming words. A rhyme is the repetition of similar sounds at specific intervals. In the poem, Cultural Perspective, rhyme has been used in several incidences, mainly to make the poem memorable and also musical .For example:

“The district screams for the kind, The scream of rejoice for actions unkind”

“I am not a killer but I must live longer, I must fight courageous, I must be stronger”

The author also employs the use of irony in the poem. In poetry terms, irony in one sense means writing a statement and later bringing out a line with an opposite meaning in the same. Irony may also mean the use of a statement contrary to normal expectations. In real life situations, it is expected that people can only rejoice upon kind actions. The author however contradicts this when he says that people are happy about unkind actions, as brought out in the line “the scream of rejoice for actions unkind”

The poet also embraces metaphorical language in the Cultural Perspective .This is the use of metaphors. A metaphor is a word or phrase that has been used to refer to something that it is not, bringing out clear similarity between the word/phrase used and the item described without the use of conjunctions. In the poem, the word ‘district’ has been used to refer to the persona’s community as evidenced in the line: “The district screams for the kind”

The author also embraces alliteration in the poem, Cultural Perspective. This is the repetition of a consonant at the beginning of two or more words, succeeding each other. Alliteration adds aesthetic value to the poem. In the poem, the line “I’m not a killer but I must live longer” indicates alliteration effects.

Finally, throughout the poem the author embraces a tone that utilizes a combination of enthusiasm and sadness. For instance, when the poet talks of being the victorious one, He expresses an enthusiastic mood. Towards the end of the poem “I prevail the winner but yet ashamed all this killing in the name, Of the hunger game” This line shows the combination of mood by the poet. He is happy that at the very end he has emerged victorious. On the other hand, the fact that he has caused deaths in the name of the hunger game makes the poet as well as the target audients sad.

Q2.Identify issues raised their analogies, metaphors and symbols used in your novel to support your analysis and explain how your visuals contribute to your analysis.

The author particularly points out torture/ some form of mistreatment as a core issue. Based on the poem, it seems like the group being described is being mistreated, as evidenced by the lines:”The district screams for the kind, the scream of rejoice for actions unkind”. This clearly shows that little mercy is being showed upon the society, and they therefore crave for some kindness to be shown on them. The group is however hopeful that someone will rise and help them eradicate their source of torture as illustrated by the line:” The chants I hear from everyone, a victor will rise but I will be the one”

Q3.How does the poem/song relate to the theme of the literature assigned?

Cultural perspective is a compound set of attitudes, values, beliefs, meanings and ideas that belong to a particular cultural group. The poet highlights a number of cultural aspects. The poet is part of the group that receives unfair treatment yet at the same time he kills them in the name of the hunger game. In any cultural group, killing and cheating is unethical when it comes to matters of cultural beliefs. The poet therefore links the poem to the theme. And this he does to the core.

Q4.What role does culture play in your poem/song?

In the simplest terms, culture refers to a manner of life by a cultural group. Every culture has unique identifiable traits. Culture in the poem instills a sense of guilt to the poem. He takes the lives of people and regrets this in some way. It is against the cultural values of any cultural group to kill. All this is illustrated in the very end of the poem when the author says “I prevail the winner but yet ashamed all this killing in the name, Of the hunger game” Culture thus plays a core role in making the author feel guilty as a result of his past actions.

Q4.What cultural perspectives are presented in your original work and how do they relate to the cultural perspective presented in the literature?

The poet presents a key issue in the form of a cultural taboo. It is a taboo to kill in any cultural grouping and setting. However, the author overlooks this norm and goes ahead to kill members a community. Killing is not acceptable by the cultural perspective in the form of the general cultural belief of, do not kill. This is a clear indicator of how the above relate to each other.
