Question 5 – Control System Design
5.1 Given the following 2nd order transfer function in Equation (5.1): () = 1 ( + 3)( + 2) (5.1)
a. Determine the Root Loci of Equation (5.1) by hand (make sure you clearly illustrate the use of the rules): (3 marks) b. Using MATLAB, Plot the Root Loci in Section (a.) From this plot, determine the location of the poles and the proportional gain, for an underdamped system giving a 10% overshoot. (2 marks)
c. Using the proportional gain, value determined in Section (b.), simulate the closed-loop system in MATLAB/Simulink by applying a unit step input. Comment on the current performance of the system. If further control is needed, comment on the type of control. (5 marks) Draw by hand your Simulink model here (include the input to output signal)
