Concert Report #2

The concert that I attended was the Berkeley Baroque Strings, that was held at St. Clément’s Episcopal Church, Parish Hall. The concert was held on Tuesday, March 5th, 2019 as from 7:30 pm. The entire performance of the concert was led by Kati Kyme, the music director, with a band of members playing the instrumentations. The main instrumentation in the concert were the violin, viola, cello, violone, and the harpsichord. During the concert, there were many repertoires performed consisting of different titles and artists as well. Some of the titles and their respective composers at the concert include: Concerto in F Major, RV 284 by Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741), Concerto in d minor, D 28 by Giuseppe Tartini (1692-1770), Concerto in A Major, RV 519 by Vivaldi, Concerto in d minor, BWV 1043 by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) and concerto in G Major by Georg Philip Telemann. After a brief intermission, other titles were played and these included Concerto in G Major by Porpora, Concerto in D Major, RV 511 by Vivaldi, Concerto in A Major, D 91 by Tartini and the final piece in accordance with the schedule was Brandenburg Concerto #5 in D major, BWV 1050 by Bach.

Despite all the listings, only six titles were played. The concerto in F Major, RV 284 by Vivaldi was done by Katie Kyme, while Margret Tylor led the violin, the sound of the violin was dominant, and the pitch was high. Concerto A Major, RV 519 by Vivaldi had its instrumentation led by Kassandra Klassy and Robin Easterbrook who played the violins. The piece as well is high pitched maintaining the same pitch all through. Concerto in d minor, BMV 1043 by JohannBach had the main instruments as the cello played by sister Barbara Swarzenski and violin led by sister Annette Swarzenski. The piece started in low tone maintaining the same key throughout the composition and was more of a meditation piece.

Concerto G Major by Georg Philip Telemann (1681-1767) was the other piece performed by Katie Kyme, and the viola was led by Nori Hudson. The tonality of the piece began slowly picking at an interval and thus varied throughout the title, with the violin sound being in dominance. Concerto in G Major by Porpera had the cello as the main instrumentation led by Katrine Gray, and it was a low pitched piece. Concerto in D Major, RV 511by Vilvadi was the last title that was played by Katie Kyme. The main instrumentations were the violins led by Titia Martin and Paula White, and so the dominant sound was that of the violin. The piece had a high key maintaining the same rhythm throughout the title.

The concert relates much with what I have learned in the course; a single mood characterizes the Baroque music throughout the title while major and minor keys replace the modes. The same characteristics are evident in the pieces performed in the concert and therefore easy to relate to the Baroque music that existed between the period 1600-1750. I enjoyed the concert fully, the attendance was full, and everyone else seemed to be carried by the strings. The mood of the concert as well was relaxing and therefore enjoyed every bit of it.
