Clinical & Molecular Genetics
1. A 3000 word essay on DNA sequencing (details below)
2. Describe in detail, using diagrams where appropriate, the different methods used for sequencing DNA.
Points to include are:
• Sanger and Maxam & Gilbert DNA sequencing
• Pyrosequencing
• Massively parallel DNA sequencing
• Next generation DNA sequencing
Your answer should include all aspects of DNA sequencing covered in the lectures. Information can be found in the lecture presentations on Blackboard and in the core text, ‘Genetics: A Conceptual Approach’ by Benjamin A. Pierce. Marks will also be given for evidence of independent research on the topic, e.g. on future directions.
Your essay should be approximately 3000 words and should be written in 12-pt Times New Roman with a line spacing of 1.5. The essay should be structured, starting with a concise introduction and ending with a concluding paragraph. The inclusion of one or two appropriate diagrams is strongly encouraged, but these must be explained fully in the text. It is essential that you include a short reference list using the Harvard System following your conclusion. A guide to referencing can be found in ‘Learning Materials’ on the CMG Blackboard site.
Marking Scheme:
Introduction 10 marks
Scientific understanding 50 marks
Diagrams (including relevance & interpretation) 15 marks
Conclusion 10 marks
References (format, extent, value, relevance) 10 marks
Overall presentation (structure, format, easiness to read) 5 marks
