This Assignment for this unit is a Lab that you will complete in WileyPLUS. You will be focusing on how enzymes work as biological catalysts. Enzymes are important because they increase the rate of chemical reactions. Specifically, this lab will show how temperature, pH, and substrate concentration affect sucrase activity. Sucrase is an enzyme that catalyzes sucrose, a disaccharide, into the simple monosaccharides of glucose and fructose. When your body has a fever, your temperature is elevated. Since enzymes work at a certain temperature (37o C), a fever throws off the optimal working conditions of enzymes and thus how your body functions. Learning how enzymes function will ultimately show you how your body functions properly and maintains homeostasis. You will also see that under certain conditions, such as a fever, your body fights to regain control and thus get back to its homeostatic state.
