Obesity is listed as the number one killer disease among Americans. Cases of obesity supersede those of cancer and other terminal diseases. In fact, statistics record that one third of Americans are either overweight or obese. This makes the problem of obesity a cultural but life threatening problem. Obesity does not affect adults alone. On the contrary, more children are reported as being obese in this modern day century. This is attributed to the types of food that the society is exposed to, lack of exercise among family members, and a passive lifestyle that encourages fat to build up in the body

Divorce is a term that was once frowned upon by the society. This was when the society was still held together by strong moral fibers. At that time, the family unit mattered more than anything. More so, women and men had clearly defined roles with women being homemakers and men providers. This has since changed and the society no longer regards divorce with as much askance. With this trend, it is not a surprise that America is the leading nation with regard to having the most divorced couples in the world. More so, most marriages in the modern day America are not expected to last beyond the third year.

Gay marriages have been the subject of controversy around the world. Some people who consider themselves liberal have nothing against gay people and regard them as equals. However, in some conservative societies, gays and lesbians are regarded with much suspicion. Some people even regard the act of homosexuality as being sinful and against their religious beliefs. Whatever the case, the question of whether gays and lesbians deserve recognition in the society will never be answered satisfactorily. People will always have different opinions on the matter. When all is said and done, it is essential that every human being, gay or not, be accorded proper rights and privileges as per the constitution.

The debate on whether or not to legalize abortion continues in many boardrooms, church halls, mosques, and even schools. To some, the act is an abomination, an offense to the creator of human life. However, other people feel that it is better to terminate a life instead of bringing a child in the world to face suffering. Whatever way people chose to look at it, one must consider the consequences of abortion before embarking on that route. Whether it is illegal or legal, many women agree that the effects of abortion are never pleasant. Perhaps the most serious effect is the trauma and psychological torture of knowing that one terminated a life before it even began.

Marijuana, a drug that is today considered illegal in most parts of the world was once a harmless weed that grew liberally in parts of North America. Today, the drug is considered harmful to the mind and also to the nervous system of people. Marijuana is said to induce hallucinations and if severely abused, it can lead to madness. Despite these beliefs about marijuana, the same drug is used as a medicinal drug in the treatment of terminal diseases. Doctors prescribe marijuana to reduce terminal pain and nausea in patients.  The drug is commonly used in cancer patients to reduce the effects of chemotherapy. More so, patients suffering from migraines are patients are likely to get a prescription of medical marijuana from their doctor.

Non-communicable diseases are on the rise in the contemporary world. According to the latest statistics from the center for diseases and control, these diseases have continued to affect more and more people. Cancer, diabetes, and hypertension are among these fatal diseases. Unlike in the past when these diseases affected the old in the society, the trend has completely changed. This is because these diseases are high in the young people. According to the latest statistics on those affected by this disease, children, and the youth, make up a considerable percentage. Among the causes for these maladies, include lifestyle and consumption of harmful foods. Therefore, in order to control the rise in these diseases, then a change in feeding patterns and lifestyle are inevitable.

Technology has grown to a completely new level in the contemporary world. There are new inventions coming up each day. Technology has brought about good and bad things to the society. The presence of the internet has helped to solve matters of communication. The internet has enabled people to effectively communicate and exchange information from across the world. On the other hand, technology has been used to commit evil and unthinkable crimes. Terrorists continue to use the internet to cause havoc across the world. Cyber crimes and harmful information have also painted the internet in bad light. According to statistic, technology had brought about new crimes into the globe. Despite all these, technologies such as CCTV and metal detectors have helped to reduce crime significantly.

In the wake of increasing populations, scientists continue to explore different avenues to feed the world. This has lead to the introduction of genetically modified organisms. This technology involves genetic engineering, which boosts production largely; it has increased production of all foods and has been seen to be the solution to the perennial hunger and drought across the world. Many countries have embraced the use of genetic engineering, as production of food is an important factor for growth. However, there are several issues, which have shrouded the use of genetic engineering. According to research, foods produced using this technology are said to have contaminants and chemicals, which are fatal if consumed in large quantities. Moreover, GMO’s are to blame for the current rise in cases of non-communicable diseases.

Since the 2008 credit crunch, there are several areas in the economy, which have been hardly hit. The construction industry is one of the areas hard hit by the effect of the economic downturn. This is because the cost of housing significantly reduced during this harsh economic period. Consequently, students studying construction and architecture end up jobless. This is because the industry does not have mechanisms to embrace new graduates. As a result, prestigious careers such as architecture no longer appeal to students. This is because there no jobs promise after the entire course. It is evident that economics can indirectly affect education.

Climate change is a myth that continues to shroud discussion in the international arena. Countries have been forced to sign treaties that will see them reduce any form of pollution, which can lead to the depletion of the o-zone layer. These steps have been taken after several experiences of change in weather patterns. Climatic conditions such as summer and winter seem to take longer in the world. According to weather experts, winter has been colder than ever before. This is an example of how the weather has changed because of climate change. It is thus important to make sure that the environment is conserved if we want a safe future.
