This assignment is designed to help you prepare to write Essay #3. You will search and write about five sources. Compiling this bibliography will help you select an audience, know which methods are effective for you to use, find authority for your position, and practice summarizing and evaluating sources.

Steps

1. Review the “Annotated Bibliography” description handout from the Connors Writing Center.
2. Using what you learn in our library research day, start finding research for your argumentative essay. Look for information on opposing viewpoints and in many forms, such as articles, websites, books, video, etc. Think of what you need to make an argument, such as:

• Statistics and facts— Consider not only those directed related to your debate, but on the same issue or a related issue. Ex: If you’re argument is about drilling for oil, you might look at current gas prices.
• Studies— Peer re-viewed journals or reliable books.
• Quotes from trusted authorities— Political figures, historical, governmental, etc.
• Stories or anecdotes— Trusted articles, books, documentaries, radio or TV broadcasts
• Counter-examples— Consider other controversies that can be compared yours. If you suggest a change, what similar approach can you find that another group has taken?
• Primary sources— Immediate, first-hand accounts of a topic from people who had a direct connection with it (Are you a primary source?)
• Reputable magazines— for political issues you may consider news and magazine sites. Consider the following guide:

○ Liberal: Mother Jones, The Nation, Harper’s, The New Yorker, The American Prospect, and The New York Times

1. Determine the quality of the source. Use the “CRAAP Text” from class (currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, purpose). Wikipedia, About.com, and other unedited sources CANNOT be used. For the purpose of this bibliography assignment, you may NOT use any encyclopedia as one of your five sources.

1. Write your Annotated Bibliography for five of the sources you have found. Note: you CANNOT use the same type of source for all five (not all articles, websites, books, etc.).

(1). Cite the source in MLA “Works Cited” or APA “References” style format.

(2) 1st paragraph: Summarize

(3) 2nd paragraph: Assess/Evaluate

(4) 3rd paragraph: Reflect on the source and how it may fit into your research and your paper. Practice avoiding “I” in this section.
