Compare two poems that both respond to the same painting. Begin by looking over Brueghel’s painting “Landscape with the Fall of Icarus” (Be sure to note the legs of Icarus in the water in the lower right portion of the painting). Then read the two poems listed below by Auden and Williams:

Then write an essay in which you analyze the two poems by comparing their characteristics and their relationship to the painting. These poems both make allusions to Brueghel’s painting. Which of the two seems to make the better use out of the painting? Explain. Is the myth of Icarus as important to the poems as it is to the painting? Is it important to the painting? How does referencing the painting add meaning to the poem you feel makes the best use of the painting? You might also discuss the choice of images used in the poems. What are their connotations? How do these images affect the tone of the poems, and what does that tell us about the theme? Which of the two poems seems to be the most effective in achieving its goals and why?
