Summary of article.

This article gives the relationship between race, racism and discrimination in various settings such as in identity development and schooling processes, workplaces and labor markets, and contact and interpersonal interaction. It states that according to extensive studies that have been carried out, negative stereotypes on ethnic minorities have devastating effects on the minority students’ academic accomplishments. The oppositional culture theory proposes that the minority students with low expectations make them ambivalent about education and they may drop out of school thinking that academic achievement is a white person characteristic. From here, they discourage their friends from partaking in academic excellence by asking them to stop ‘acting white’.

In a nutshell, this article not only explains the effects of racism on a nation but also narrows it down to how it affects the different settings of the minorities’ lives.

Critiquing the article.

Despite this article exemplifying the main aims of social psychological studies on racial matters and exploring how the society is involved in the creation of individuals having specific forms of ethnic-racial attitudes and identities, it does not speak from a racist’s perspective. The only aspects given are the minorities and the third person, who is a sociologist sympathetic to the minority but does not attempt to demystify why the racist person thinks the way he does.

The relevance of the article to my essay and how is it a reliable source.

I picked this scholarly article because of it is a conglomeration of works by many theorists and sociologists on this topic. It includes studies that bring forth new methodological and theoretical bridges hence, bringing different points of view on board. This will ensure that my paper does not focus on one way of thinking but have a different take on the subject matter, for example, a combination of the Goffmanian stigma theory and Strykers symbolic interactionalism and identity theory brings about a rich account of how race and discrimination in the workplace affect the ethnic minority employees. Second, I chose this article because unlike others, gave real reports of the effects of racism from the minorities themselves, rather than a piece that is full of speculation.
