Alcohol

Alcohol
Alcohol consumption is one of the primary causes of chronic and acute harm in many countries across the world. Despite the fact that alcohol is highly consumed, there are concerns of its effects hence various initiatives to regulate it. This paper provides a summary of two articles on alcohol, and reasons why alcohol consumption is bad based on the articles.
The article “Alcohol consumption and sport: a cross-sectional study of alcohol management practices associated with at-risk alcohol consumption at community football clubs” by Kingsland et al. explores on the consumption of alcohol amongst various sports personalities, and aIDresses on the need for adoption of appropriate alcohol management practices among at-risk alcohol consuming members of community football clubs. Excessive consumption of alcohol is one of the major causes of chronic diseases as well as injuries among the people who engage in drinking. In most development countries, studies indicate that members of sporting clubs engage in at-risk alcohol consumption, and exceed the level of those at community level. Members who come from teams of less than 150 members were at risk of over consuming alcohol compared to those that had larger membership. This requires intervention to help in the management and regulation of intake of alcoholic. The alcohol harm reduction strategies should target specific alcohol management practices in these football clubs to help in reducing the prevalence. The effects of alcohol intake can only be managed if there is will amongst the concerned parties.
In the second article “Alcohol and alcohol-related harm in China: policy changes needed” by Yi,-lang et al., alcohol consumption is increasing at a rapid rate in China compared to other countries in the world. This increase in consumption is related to the steady increase in its production. Even as consumption rate increases, it comes with a number of harms. Although less research has been done of the effects of consumption, the major harm is the Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), which involves harmful patterns of drinking such as abuse and dependence on alcohol. This leads to mental and physical health as well as social functioning challenges. Statistics by WHO estimated that China’s rate of AUD is 6.9% among men and 0.2% among the women. The increase in alcohol consumption in China is related to weak policies of sale and consumption, weak tax policy, drink driving laws, making licenses and sale of alcohol to minors.
Based on the articles, it is evident that consumption of alcohol is harmful to the health of an individual and as well to the overall functioning in the life of a person. Sports members who engage in alcohol consumption are vulnerable to chronic diseases and injuries that may render them unsuitable to participate in the sports. Therefore, it ruins people’s careers and hence the need to embrace alcohol management practices. Similarly, in the second article, it is apparent that effects of alcohol are rife and impacts negatively on the life of an individual. Some of the effects include mental, social and physical problems that affect the life of an alcoholic.
Therefore, it is high time that the various stakeholders concerned provide appropriate mechanism and strategies to curb increased alcohol consumption. This will help to prevent many of the problems such as health complications and injury experiences.
