A new head of corrections at a county facility has determined that too many of her staff have gotten into their leadership positions (managers and supervisors) through longevity and by default. Because she is unable to move them out of their positions due to bureaucratic rules, she has decided to implement a leadership development program that encompasses both existing leaders as well as individual contributors who hope to one day become leaders in the organization. The leadership development program will include OJT, in-house workshops, and “credit” for taking approved leadership classes offered by an online university. In addition, leadership skills will become part of each manager’s and supervisor’s evaluation. This represents a big change for the organization. Analyze and discuss the potential sources of personal and organizational resistance that the head of the facility should take into consideration and recommend appropriate solutions for dealing with each issue you identify.
