The couple is a cohabiting gay male couple (they share a household but have no legal bond). The couple has been together for three years, they are monogamous, and they have committed themselves to one another. Both men have decided that they would like to raise a child together. Both of the men are in their early 30’s. One of the men has a post-graduate degree and a professional job that is family friendly, allows for flex time, and provides health coverage for him but not his partner. One of the men does not have a college degree and has a job in the service industry, which provides inflexible, unstable work hours and no health benefits. The men live in Bend, Oregon, and neither has family living in the area. Also, this couple is an interracial couple – one is non-Hispanic white and one is African American (non-Hispanic).

The couple is heterosexual and has been married for about ten years. They are both in their 40’s. The husband has a college degree, a professional job and is the primary breadwinner of the family. The wife works part time and does not have a college degree. They have two kids: one is an elementary school aged boy and one is a miIDle school aged girl. Their marriage is “troubled” in the sense that the two are cold and distant. They sleep in different bedrooms, and their marriage has been troubled for several years. After being contacted by a school counselor who reported their daughter’s falling grades, they recently went to counseling to work on their relationship. The counseling was ineffective, and they have since stopped going.
