According to Kumar (2014), “The case study design is based upon the assumption that the case being studied is typical of cases of a certain type and therefore a single case can provide insight into the events and situations prevalent in a group from where the case has been drawn†(p. 155). Case studies are commonly completed in the medical field and very useful to their research when finding for treatment and cures. “The case study idea represents a major part of the methodology used by physicians to collect and disseminate information†(Salkind, 2017, p. 163). There is a lot of time and work spent when conducting case studies.
In research there are advantages and disadvantages to any method one chooses to use. The advantages of case studies include the following: focuses on one individual or thing for a more detailed data, ability to use several different techniques, provides a richer account of what is occurring through intensive, personal scrutiny insight, and builds on an existing base of knowledge, contribute to it, and suggest directions for future study. The disadvantages of case studies are time consuming, notes collected reflects only one form of reality, not comprehensive as other methods, no cause and effect relationship exists, and the generalization of the information is limited (Salkind, 2017).
An example of an advantage case study is the Willowbrook State School study completed in Staten Island, New York. In this study children were infected with hepatitis and provided medical treatment. The purpose of the study was to prevent the infection. The study worked and provided useful information on the disease. An example of a disadvantage case study is the longitudinal study completed on television, imagination, and aggression. It tested the viewing of television in a family setting and influences on social interaction patterns. The study was time consuming and took place over five years (Salkind, 2017).

In my article, it talks about how case study has evolved over the years as a useful tool in investigating specific situations and testing theoretical models in real life situations. “It is a method used to narrow down a very broad field of research into one easily researchable topic†(Case Study Research Design, 2008). A case study is not intended to answer a question completely. It is left for observation and elaboration. The article provides details on how to design, conduct, and analyze a case study. When designing, one should use a case that is interesting to them. The research needs to be thorough. It is essential to design based off how you intend to handle the issue and make sure all information is relevant. The research notes should be meticulous and systematic. The subject and its relevance are the foundation of the case study. The article further talks about compiling a list with about four to five points to address in the study. In the final stages the results tend to be a little bias. Analyzing results for a case study tends to be more of one’s opinion than statistical methods. The usual idea is to try and collate your data into a manageable form and construct a narrative around it. When writing one must assume the person has no knowledge of the subject. The article provided me with some good information for my research project (Case Study Research Design, 20018). Some of the take away for me will be to create a list of five good points to address in my paper and make sure I write in a tone as if no one knows anything about the subject. I will try to be less bias as possible when writing my paper. “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings” (Proverbs 25:2, New International Version).
