305/dis2 Identify a crime or criminal issue that you believe

305/dis2 Identify a crime or criminal issue that you believe has a law enforcement solution. Considering the Problem Analysis Chart (Step 8) in Crime Analysis for Problem Solvers in 60 Small Steps (assigned reading for Week Two) and the Twenty Five Techniques of Situational Prevention chart, propose a potential solution to the crime or criminal issue you identified. Explain how the technique will effectively reduce the possibility of the crime occurring. If the technique is effective, what is the expected result on social and criminal justice? You may use this research in your Final Project. Your initial post must be a minimum of 250 words in length. Support your post with examples from your required reading material and /or other scholarly sources, and provide in-text citation in APA style. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7. After reviewing the initial post of your classmates, select another potential solution from the ‘Twenty Five Techniques of Situational Prevention,” and discuss a complementary program that addresses the same issue identified in their posts which would give a complimentary and more comprehensive program. *Here is the first classmate to respond to. This is not to critique their work. More so just to discuss further on the subject following what they said. First student: Malinda Gore I chose from the Twenty-Five Techniques of Situational Prevention chart #23 which is the “Alert Conscience.” With this technique it talks about Roadside speed display Boards, Signatures for customs Declarations and Shoplifting is stealing. (http://www.popcenter.org/library/25%20techniques%20grid.pdf) When we look at roadside speed displays I have seen this a lot around where I live. One actually lights up red and blue so my first thought was okay where is the cop at. I think if there were more that displays the fact that you are doing over the speed limit that it may deter people from speeding. Some places even put in speed bumps or Dips. Either one of these if someone is speeding has the potential to damage a vehicle if the person driving is not obeying the speed limit that is posted. Honestly that would be there fault. I feel in this case that the triangle leaves us with The manager which is the place someone is speeding each time and the Handler is of course the offender who is breaking the law by speeding. (http://www.popcenter.org/learning/60steps/index.cfm?stepNum=8) With the Signatures for Customs Declarations when looking at the Customs Declaration this is given to those who are arriving into the United States. This form must be filled out to make sure that everything the person is bringing in is noted and that it’s not supposed to come into the United States. “U.S. Customs and Border Protection is responsible for protecting the United States against the illegal importation of prohibited items.” If the information is filled out properly, documented correctly and filled the way it should be then there should not be any problems. However, I think we have to remember that people love to hide things in certain places so maybe cavity searches may be more frequent I am not sure but. With this one I feel that the problem triangle hits all three points. Handler again would be the offender bringing in contraband, Manager being Customs and the U.S border where we know people like to press their luck with bringing things in and of course the Guardian which would be any victims who encounter those who have brought contraband in or other items and basically all of the United States since U.S customs is supposed to protect us from those who are trying to come over. Second Student: Tim Arnold The crime I would like to address is non-forced break-ins, which falls under unlawful entry and/or housebreaking. These types of crimes and property theft can be almost eliminated if the owner of the property would follow simple physical security measures.I am not saying one would need to go out and buy an alarm system for one’s house, that’s ridiculous when all one has to do is lock the doors and secure the openings in the home to make it more secure. The alarm system would be more for forceful entry rather than non-forced entry. Non-forced entry in a car, a home, or outlying structure can be mitigated by using the problem analysis triangle and some simple prevention techniques. These types of techniques include hardening the structure, concealing targets, removing targets, setting rules and being alert. If high value items are not in plain sight the opportunity is limited to what the prey can see.If one locks all locks then the possibility of an offender just walking in is eliminated. If one sets a rule as the last one out “always locks the door” and “the last one in locks the doors” the habit would become second nature. This type of crime could be combated if homeowners and property owners just became aware of their actions and made adjustments to daily routines. This rule may work for some but not for all.Society would more than likely see this “locking rule” as unprecedented since most people trust others and in order to be situational aware one needs to trust themselves first.Until society sees this locking issue as a larger problem the complacence will continue and the crimes will still be committed.Advertisement and news broadcasting could be an effective approach to get the message out and help decrease this type of crime, but there will always be that “one” who didn’t follow the simple technique and will become that statistic.
