One of the primary objectives of this course is to provide participants with the most current research and strategies to identify and address students’ literacy needs– both their strengths and areas of growth. The assignments completed throughout the course were designed to lead you toward successfully completing the final exam. The final exam requires you to look at a lesson you have taught or will be teaching and:
1. identify a literacy need (skill) of your students and
2. design a lesson that explicitly describes how you will teach and assess the identified skill
The literacy skill can be related to reading or writing, but it has to be related to your specific content. You can use an assignment you completed for this course and develop it more by following the specific instructions outlined in the final exam. I highly encourage you to use one of the strategies you learned from this course.
As you plan the lesson, consider the following:
- What is one literacy skill your students will need for success in your upcoming unit or lesson?
- Will they need to read/listen to/view anything?
- Will they need to write anything?
Your lesson SHOULD NOT be:
- A lesson on skills that are not critical to navigating texts or types of writing for the topic.
- A lesson built around topics that are not relevant to students and/or the content.
- Entirely teacher lecture
Remember– the purpose of the final exam lesson is to teach students one literacy skill they will need for success in understanding the topic you are teaching. You have studied numerous literacy strategies related to reading, comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and writing– reflect on your assignments to develop your instructional plan. We look forward to seeing the great plans that you all put together!!
