Discussion 3.1: Alterations of Neurologic Function
Directions
The purpose of this discussion is to assess your critical thinking skills as you discuss the pathophysiologic processes and the clinical manifestations of these alterations of the neurologic system in addition to exploring methods of learning.
Construct a concept map, draw a picture, use the Cornell system of note taking, or construct a diagram to discuss one of the following questions for your initial post. Feel free to use any tool of your choice or CANVA (https://www.canva.com/) to construct your concept map.
Be sure to point out relationships between the clinical manifestations and the underlying
pathophysiologic processes along with the clinical significance and application to the patient.
Utilize at least one in-course source of information and cite that along with your other sources of information for your initial post.
Submit your initial post addressing only the question that corresponds to the question you chose. Do not submit an answer for each question that is listed.
Do not submit a list of clinical manifestations. These must be discussed and explained. Consider, for example, how the pathophysiologic processes cause the clinical manifestations and what the clinical significance is to the individual affected.
Choose one of the listed topics to address for your initial post:
Question 1: A 46-year-old patient complains of insomnia and daytime fatigue. They ask about what could be causing their insomnia. Using scientific evidence and provider-level language, and considering some of the more common sleep disorders, what information would you provide to the 8/28/23, 8:41 AM Topic: Discussion 3.1: Alterations of Neurologic Function https://maryville.instructure.com/courses/75417/discussion_topics/1354994?module_item_id=6223249 2/6 patient regarding the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of one of these disorders? What
are the clinical implications for the patient? What are the nursing implications?
Question 2: A 10-year-old patient presents to the emergency department (ED) after experiencing diffuse jerking of his arms and legs accompanied with loss of consciousness. The parents ask the ED provider what might have caused these symptoms. Using scientific evidence and provider-level language, what information would you provide to them regarding the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of one possible cause of these symptoms that can occur in children? What are the clinical implications for the patient? What are the nursing implications?
Question 3: A woman brings her husband to your clinic for evaluation. She is concerned because he has experienced forgetfulness and difficulty performing simple computations over the past year. Using scientific evidence and provider-level language, describe the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of one plausible cause of this presentation. What are the clinical implications for the patient? What are the nursing implications?
Question 4: A 75-year-old patient presents to the emergency department with hemiparesis and loss of sensation on the same side and a history of hypertension. Using scientific evidence and provider- level language, describe risk factors, pathophysiology, and clinical manifestations for one plausible cause of these symptoms. What are the clinical implications for the patient? What are the nursing implications?
Question 5: A 38-year-old patient has recently been diagnosed with diffuse burning sensations in her arms and legs. Using scientific evidence and provider-level language, discuss the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations for one condition or disease that might cause this presentation. What are the clinical implications for the patient? What are the nursing implications?
Question 6: A 6-year-old patient presents with a severe headache, nausea, vomiting, and fever. Using scientific evidence and provider-level language, discuss the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations for one infectious disease of the nervous system that might cause this presentation. What are the clinical implications for the patient? What are the nursing implications?
Question 7: A 5-year-old child presents with nausea, vomiting, headache, and diplopia. Using scientific evidence and provider-level language, discuss the pathophysiology and additional possible clinical manifestations of one possible cause of these symptoms. What are the clinical implications for the patient? What are the nursing implications?
Discussion Expectations
Posts and responses should be original work.
Your initial post must contain at least two citations/references.
A total of two peer responses are required, and at least one of these should be supported with a scholarly source.
Discussions are to demonstrate and share your knowledge and experience. Thus, use examples to validate your understanding, not just a list of facts. (You may incorporate facts within your posts/responses.)
Presented information should be a synthesis of your thoughts about the works of
others. Quoted material in scholarly writing should be used sparingly, appropriately, and only when necessary. Quoted material will not count for credit for any assigned topics.
Citations and references must be written using current APA professional paper format
(https://maryville.instructure.com/courses/75417/modules/items/6223017) . Websites, Wikipedia, Google
Scholar, and other non-academic references are not peer-reviewed. Your references should be peer- reviewed materials published within the past five years or hallmark articles relevant to the topic.

Please do not utilize patient-level information to support your writing.
Post your original response by the end of Day 3. Then, by the end of Day 6, respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts on different days and on scenarios other than your own.
If you copy and paste references from the course into your assignment, be sure to confirm APA formatting before submitting.
Please Note
You will not be able to delete or revise a post after you submit it. It would be in your best interest to spend a couple of minutes reviewing your post before submitting.
You will not be able to see anyone else’s posts until you post first. As soon as you submit a post, you will be able to view everyone else’s posts.
