Your argument essay’s grade is based on the following criteria: • 10% A compelling introduction with appropriate background information and your thesis claim (what you intend to argue through out your paper and summarizing points of your overall reasons). • 40 % Each new body paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that harkens back to your thesis and provides development and evidence for the paragraph’s topic. The body of your essay should emulate a structure based on the types of argument Lunsford talks about in her book. You argument can be a rhetorical analysis, an argument of fact, definition or evaluation. Or it can be a causal or academic argument. Or you can write a proposal. Either way, try to structure your piece around the genre you chose and develop and organize your ideas through the ladder of abstraction and cohesion/unity. • 25 % A demonstration of source integration strategy. A total of at least six sources, with a correctly formatted APA in-text citations and works cited (You may use the three from your annotated bibliography essay, but you will need at least three additional sources.) • The following mediums are required: one from a book (can be an e-book), one from a mixed-media source, two from academic peer reviewed journals, and the remaining two will be your choice (Wikipedia and social media feeds are not allowed unless otherwise discussed). • Significant evidence includes: factual data, statistics, personal examples (real or hypothetical), testimony, peer-reviewed research, and logical sub-arguments. • 5% An identification of your specific audience and an attempt to convince audiences through the tools of rhetoric such as the appeals of persuasion, syntax, word choice, figurative language etc…. You will need to incorporate the three appeals of persuasion, establishing an ethos for yourself and your selected sources, developing a rational argument through logos, and engaging your readers through pathos by using story-like anecdotes, specific details, and vivid, emotionally charged language. • 15% Your paper should evidence significant changes from each writing/revision strategy employed over the last month (Ladder of Abstraction, Unity & Cohesion, Source Integration) • 5% A polished essay with correct APA formatting and little to no grammatical errors. APA minimum requirements of title page, running head, pages numbers, in-text citations and reference sheet. Sections headings are optional. An “A†essay will meet the following criteria • Shows evidence of writing and revision strategies • Meets length requirement of five to seven pages • Presents a sound, qualified claim with a well-developed argument • Directs argument at specific audiences • Includes all six source mediums and a correctly formatted APA citations • Incorporates your own appeals of persuasion: ethos, pathos, logos • Connects coherently formed paragraphs with a thesis, topic sentences, and transitions • Contains little to no grammatical errors or citations issues
