Although the novel is titled Sula, the real protagonist is Nel because she is the one who is transformed by the end.

Discussion 1

Even though Nel is displayed as from a chaotic family as the novel begins she later has a great friendship with Sula. Sula is from a completely different family and she contributes to the character formation of Nel. It is true that since the novel is titled Sula it talks and focuses more on Nel. This is because she is the girl who would have followed in the footsteps of her family members like mum however she changes and becomes a better person while on the other side the person expected to be very good that is Sula does not retain her goodness rather she becomes the unexpected. Sula changes so much and she decides to live an independent life. This independent life makes her get into problems with her best-friend Nel after she sleeps with her husband Jude. Due to her independent life, she never apologizes as Nel tries to talk to her about it. “And you didn’t love me enough to leave him alone. To let him love me. You had to take him away”. Here Nel tries to talk to Sula however she is already destroyed and she is not ready to change. In the final chapter of the book, Nel is displayed as a middle-aged woman who even though having gone through a lot can change and be a good person. Sula dies at an early age. Therefore it is true that Nel is the main protagonist because she is the one who gets transformed at the end.

Cassie: In Toni Morrison’s novel Sula, both Sula and Nel go on journeys of self-discovery and happiness, which is accomplished through their friendship. However, Sula’s journey of self-discovery continues after their friendship is destroyed while Nel’s is halted due to their differing life paths.

I agree with you in the fact that the two black ladies go on a journey of self-discovery. It is this journey that makes them discover and realize new things that are helpful to them as well as which build them. Adding the fact that Nel’s journey of self-discovery is slowed down would be better than stating that it is halted. This is because Nel does not completely stop her self-discovery even though it is not vibrant and open like that of Sula.

In 1993, Morrison was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature, and thus became the first African American and only the eighth woman ever to win the award. According to Maureen O’Brien in Publishers Weekly, Morrison said, “What is most wonderful for me is to know that the Prize has at last been awarded to an African American. I thank God that my mother is alive to see this day.” In 1996, she received the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.

Paraphrase 1

Morrison was the eighth lady to win the Nobel peace prize in the year 1992. She was also the first-ever African American woman to receive this award. She recognizes the fact that the award has been awarded to an African American writer and therefore this displays the position with which she holds the role of African American literature in American society. She also is happy that her mother will be able to see what she won because she is still alive. She also received a second award which was the national book foundation medal.
