Admission Essay

People choose profession in different ways. Some follow a family tradition. Others use the chosen specialty to protest against their parents’ aspirations. It may be a deliberate or an emotional choice, a temporary fashion statement or a grounded attempt to break away from societal limitations. In my case, my desire to become a Family Nurse Practitioner originates from my inborn empathy, the need to be helpful to others, and a clear vision of what I can do to improve people’s well-being. I would not say that I was born to be a nurse because it sounds too pretentious. However, I feel confident to claim that my character traits, my passion, and determination to develop in this sphere of human activity make me a worthy candidate to be considered for the enrollment in this program. I know I can succeed academically because I am guided by one of the most powerful driving forces of all – a sound understanding where I belong and where my qualities and skills will be most useful and advantageous for the community. This is the nursing field.

When choosing the program to apply to, I conducted a detailed, comprehensive research. I perceive a high-quality education as a prerequisite to a successful professional career. While I do believe that I possess the necessary traits to become a competent Family Nurse Practitioner, I do not overestimate the set of innate qualities. I know that if unpolished under the guidance of top-notch professionals, these qualities might fail to flourish to the benefit of others. Therefore, the choice of a proper educational facility with the academic staff and curriculum matching my urge to learn from the best was paramount for me. I communicated with the alumni of different nursing programs, explored available learning instruments various programs offer, and even compiled a list of pros and cons of a dozen of universities offering the needed training. As a result, Utica University’s program in nursing came out a winner in all categories of my research.

I was specifically impressed by That Utica University, enabling the nursing students to get a unique clinical experience in a fully equipped hospital ward led by highly competent professionals. I think that this is the best way of exposing students to a wide range of different cases in field conditions while still being able to learn by mistakes without hurting patients and one of the most efficient means of combining theory and practice.

In addition to this outstanding learning instrument that essentially expands students’ possibilities to gain knowledge and own skills in a clinical environment, Utica University’s program in nursing also appeals to me by its general vision of the nursing education. I support their focus on the balance between theoretical training and clinical experience because I am confident that these are two integral elements of a successful nursing education. One cannot and should not exist without the other, which is sometimes overlooked in other programs that specialize in either more theory or more clinical expertise.

In addition, I feel that the mission of Utica University’s program in nursing fits my emerging nursing philosophy the best as well. When inviting students to enroll in this program, the introduction touches upon some vital qualities future nurses should possess, such as empathy, patience, and calmness together with their ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment and build a career in the sphere that can be called anything but boring. This is what I feel about becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner upon the completion of my studies.

If I am honored to be accepted to this program, I plan to use my knowledge and skills to help people and work toward the improvement of the general well-being of the community. I think this is not only my professional duty, but also an honorable mission as an active member of society.
