religious roots of abolitionism

Answer this question and explain your answer thoroughly: How did Grimké use the Bible and Christian tradition as well as American patriotic and domestic ideals to make her case that the United States must end the practice of slavery? This assignment must be between 1500-2000 words, double spaced, 12pt with correct and accurate information.

Women and the Religious Roots of Abolition

You will need to upload a digital file (.pdf .doc .docx or .rtf).

ESSAY ASSIGNMENT: The central question is: How did Grimké use the Bible and Christian tradition as well as American patriotic and domestic ideals to make her case that the United States must end the practice of slavery? As you prepare your response, consider in your analysis the following elements. Upon which does Grimké rely upon: religion or patriotic ideals? To what extent does Stowe’s character of Mrs. Bird in Uncle Tom’s Cabin suggest that American women may have heeded Grimké’s advice? To what extent does Grimké embody the idea that the Cult of Domesticity empowered women? Use and cite evidence from the documents to support your analysis of Grimké’s “Appeal to Southern Women” and the excerpt from chapter nine of Stowe’s book, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. References to ALL of the excerpts must be incorporated into your essay. Do not use outside sources.

The broad question asks students to analyze specific texts of antebellum America and evaluate how they made the case for abolition and how they reveal the role of women within American culture. This is a way that students:

  • develop a historical context for understanding current issues and events
  • think critically about institutions, cultures, and behaviors in their local and/or national environment
  • understand the social, political, and economic development of the United States

Length: There is a two-page minimum length requirement for this essay. Incorporating ALL of the sources into a thorough analysis of the question may require more than two pages.

Formatting: Compose your answer in a word processing file and follow the basic guidelines for a college paper: 12-point Times New Roman Font, double-spaced, 1” margin. Save the file in an appropriate format (doc, docx, pdf, or rtf). Upload the digital version of the essay to Canvas. All students must upload their essay. Hand the professor a paper copy. Both forms of the essay are necessary for grading.

Citing Your Sources: For purposes of this assignment, you may cite your sources by referring to the author’s last name and the excerpt. For example:

Women could engage in politics by sending petitions to politicians (Grimke Excerpt 5).
