Your final project will be focused on answering this question. During this unit, you will be required to explain your understanding of the topic, participate in a group discussion on possible solutions to the problem, and finally write an essay in which you support your position on the topic with credible sources. Possible topics include: Policing, Sentencing, Youth, Education, Overcrowding, The War on Drugs,Prisoner Rights.

Reading materials : (these 3 readings are the mandatory and the only required readings to be base on)

• “How to Fix the Criminal Justice System” three student opinions by Sabrina Conte, Grace Masback, and Henry Xu published in The New York Times
• “Our Criminal-Legal System: Justice Doesn’t Have to Be Missing from Equation” by Cory Booker The Huffington Post
• “To Fix the US prison system, give every inmate the daily newspaper” by Chandra Bozelko Quartz
  • Give background information / Introduce the topic (not the readings) you will be explaining in the paper
  • State your position on the topic (your thesis – can be 1 to 2 sentences)

Task :

Support your position with evidence from all three of the assigned texts. You will need to employ synthesizing techniques (not a summary of each author’s entire article) by organizing your argument around topics and common themes, identifying connections among the texts. This means that not everything an author writes in his or her article will be relevant to your essay. Take a position on this issue (your thesis) and support your argument with evidence from the texts. You will also need to counter-argue the viewpoints that are different than your position. That is, you will need to acknowledge what other people believe and then explain why your position is best.

The best way to accomplish this is to organize your paper by IDEAS rather than sources. To do this, it is important to be able to answer the following questions:

* In what ways do the texts support or agree with one another? Do the texts share similar ideas about this topic?

*Are there places where the texts contradict or disagree with one another?

Audience :

You are writing in a semi-academic tone for people who come from educated backgrounds. Imagine you are writing for a well-respected opinion section of a magazine or newspaper. You may use “I,” but be careful that this does not take away from the strength of your argument.

II. Body – focus on developing your paragraphs around IDEAS rather than sources. Each paragraph should be about 1 idea in support of your thesis. Use the readings (and personal experience if applicable) to support your main ideas. You must have at least 2 cited pieces of evidence from 2 different articles for each body paragraph.

III. Conclusion – Remind readers of the purpose of your paper. Recap how the authors have helped better explain the issue developed in your essay. Leave the reader with an idea of why this issue is important for them to consider.
