2.The article was very interesting as it drill down on some known points. On page 297 the author stated a very poignant statement “the mission statement is timeless; whereas the vision statement is time bound” . I think this is key, in understanding the differences between the both. For instance, at my clinic ,the mission and vision has remained the same for the past 20 years.

It is also refreshing to know, the challenges my 100 year old organization faces is not foreign to other companies. The ides of following a strategic plan that aligns with vision and mission is not new to a lot of health care organizations.

I like the idea of incorporating goals, values and objectives in the planning.

This is key, because it makes the goals actionable. So many times, the company’s vision is not broken down from an operational stand point. Which makes it harder to achieve because they people “on the ground” is unable to execute the plan.

Lastly, I like the idea of incorporating the physicians and key staff members when creating a vision and mission statement. Reason being, these staff members usually have very viable insights into the company’s culture;board directors may not lack this very important information.

3.Even after working in healthcare for almost 20 years, I still have a difficult time understanding the difference between a mission and vision statement. Then some organizations even have a purpose statement. Researching strategic planning, and more specifically mission and vision statements, has shed new light for me. In the article by Small Business, I was able to have a more clear understanding of the difference between the two statements. A Mission statement is more around the organization’s current, short term goal or purpose, while a Vision statement is generally focused around future or long term purpose of the organization. Because each statement is focused around a goal of some sort, these statements typically change when their is an administrative change within the organization. Strategic planning is all about laying out details for where the organization is headed and plans on how to get there, setting goals along the way. The mission and vision statements must be in line with that strategic plan, otherwise it looks like the organization is unclear on it’s own future.

Developing a mission or vision statement can seem like a daunting task. I did like that this article provides examples of statements that other organizations have used.
