Please write essays of about 2 pages each (double-spaced, 12 pt. font) on the following questions:

1) Over the course of the 17th through the mid-19th centuries, women’s roles as mothers changed significantly. Describe this evolution, and discuss how it affected women’s identities and political activities. Be sure to refer to specific examples and to note differences along the lines of race and class.

2) Compare and contrast women’s experiences in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, and discuss the extent to which each conflict led to changes in women’s status. Here again, be sure to attend to differences among women — in this case, especially in regard to race and political allegiance (in other words, which side of the conflict women were on.)
