AMERICA IN THE WORLD: The Abolition of Slavery,

read: Read this excerpt from a statement made in 1837 by John Calhoun in which he outlines his views on slavery . Note his comparison of the lot of slaves with that of European (and northern) workers.
As you complete your readings, identify the information that addresses and anwers the following questions.
—Some southerners defended slavery claiming that it was essentially a paternalistic institution in which most slaves were treated reasonably well, and that southern slaves were better treated than northern factory “wage slaves”. How does Calhoun support this claim? How would you respond to those statements?

—Most southerners defended slavery, even though they were not part of the “Plantation Aristocracy.” According to the readings that you have completed, why did they support it?

—Discuss why it was so much easier to end the slave trade rather than to end slavery itself.
